There Is No Defense For That Performance

We’ll always have that opening defensive series.

Remember? Third and one and the Pack stuffed Tevin Coleman for no gain to force a punt. After that? To quote Perry Mason, the defense rests. What a horrific, embarrassing performance by the Packers’ defense. The blame starts with Mike Pettine and his staff. When Raheem Mostert gains 142 yards before he was even touched, you know the scheme was trash. Pettine refused to load the box and dare Jimmy Garoppolo to pass, instead content to watch Mostert dance into the secondary and then shake and bake his way to a record performance.

The defense had no answers for what Kyle Shanahan was dialing up, appearing to have learned nothing from the first matchup nor last week’s evisceration of the Vikings. Bad angles, missed tackles and a complete befuddlement of what they were facing. It wasn’t a good look for Pettine and his staff and it will be interesting to see the fall out. I expect Pettine to return, but LaFleur was pretty pointed in his post game criticism. Not that it’s LaFleur’s decision–Mike Murphy will make the ultimate call, but there will definitely be some changes on that side of the ball, on the field for sure. As far as the coaching staff goes, we’ll see.

The game pretty much ended with the Pack down 20-0 late in the second quarter, with the offense finally putting a nice drive together. A touchdown there and then you get the ball to start the second half and maybe we have a ballgame. Then Linsley and Rodgers mess up the snap, the Niners recover and score and it’s ‘see ya next season.’

I do have some issues with the offensive game plan as well. This game screamed for a heavy dose of Aaron Jones, both on the ground and through the air. Yes, when you fall behind, it’s tempting to give up on the running game, but Jones needed to be featured more on an offense that lacks a lot of dangerous weapons. That will need to be fixed in the offseason, with talent needed via free agency and the draft at both the wide receiver and tight end position.

The 49ers roster is stronger top to bottom than the Packers; there’s no question about that. But there is no reason for that team to blow the Packers off the field in both meetings. The window on the Aaron Rodgers will remain wide open for a few more years and this organization took a major step forward this season. But this offseason will be equally important. There’s a good chance this team will be stronger on the field but won’t reach 13 wins again, with a tougher schedule on tap.

They need to find a way to add pieces to the defensive line and inside linebacker and speed in the passing game. There will be time to talk about free agency, which players they should try to keep and which they should let walk away.

For now, we can lament a missed opportunity and an inability to compete with San Francisco. We can feel good about the giant step this team took this season, sweeping the division and earning the #2 seed. But ultimately, with a chance to take part in a rematch of the first Super Bowl, the Pack whiffed badly. And it’s gonna sting for a while.

Tough to win when you no longer have a top tier QB, isn’t it? Welcome to the majority of the league. Rodgers is old, slow, and average at this point. You guys had already wasted his prime, but you’ve now also wasted his later effective years as well…….

  2. Flyman says:

Thanks for your work this year Dave. I agree … bye the bye, big game, where was our #1pick?
Golf is just around the corner

  3. shot says:

Look on the bright side, our roster has a lot more positives than the Queens. Our QB is way better. Packers are the team to beat in the North. Get some more weapons on O and some D-Lineman. Could be worse. We could be stuck like the Queens.

  4. MajikMan7 says:

I thought we were well on our way after that opening defensive series, but unfortunately things went south in a hurry. At least we didn’t curl up into the fetal position the second half, but it was obviously too little/too late. This loss stings, but still pleased overall as we’ve exceeded expectations and we’re back onto a positive trajectory. I see little reason why they can’t build on this season’s success in order to make an even deeper run next season. Thank you Packers for the entertainment, and thank you Dave for documenting the journey. Peace out, and GO PACK GO!

  5. grandma death says:

“we got a defense!” Man that it was funny when Rodgers said that. A shit leopard can’t change its spots and that “defense” got completely sodomized over and over and over and the Packers couldn’t do a damn thing about it. Like Troy Aikman said, the 9ers took the Packer manhood. The Packers are so fraudulent they should change their name to the Madoffs. Rodgers is washed, looks like a whiny little emo boy out there. Nothing left to do except hope another HOF QB falls into the lap of Gluteye in the draft.

  6. Jake says:

Dom Capers ran a better defense then Pettine did in this game. Not featuring Jones in the running game was assine, needed to keep Mostert away from the ball. Rodgers was ineffective in the first half, again and managed some garbage-time stats to make his box score look better. Rodgers fumble and INT helped cement this loss and it was a bad one.

  7. CMYWILLY says:

LOL, the MOAT A A Ron played great!

  8. Brian says:

Can you spell boatrace? Don’t worry we’ll be better next year. No concerns about the aging quarterback, an aging offensive line, weak receiving corps, weak tightends, linebacking issues, little depth in the secondary. Couldn’t get it done this year with a weak schedule, injured opponents, and few injuries of our own.

  9. Gravy Soaked Goat Lover says:

shot is right, at least we’re better than the Queens. We’re better than a Wild Card team with a junk offensive line and no cap room to fix it. Yeah us! Does it help to say we’re better than the Lions and Browns too? I guess after we got bitch slapped all night and exposed as frauds we have to dig deep to find some kind of moral victory. Gopackgo.

  10. I'd rather be fishing says:

It’s harder to win when you have to actually gain yards to get a first down instead of relying on the refs. Rogers’ window has been shut for a couple years now, you just don’t realize it yet. Have fun with the rebuild!

  11. Roscoe Lombardi says:

Roscoe Lombardi here, now that’s the third time our hero Aaron Rodgers had to overcome not only the opposing defense, but biased refs, and inept coaches on his own sideline.
Aaron has been to 4 championship games and is now 1 – 3. At least he isn’t like perennial playoff choker Peyton Manning who was 4 – 1 in championship games. A closer look at that stat reveals the truth. Manning had to face Tom Brady in 4 of this games and won 3, the familiarity was to Manning’s advantage. Poor Aaron had to face the Bears 3rd string gunslinger, Wilson, that Arlanta fellow, and now Garapolopolus. What do you expect with a murderer’s row of QBs like that? Like my old daddy, HOF coach of the Washington Redskins used to say, “Son, in Wisconsin, Packers fandom and IQ are inversely proportional. “

  12. Dave From Maple Grove says:

My life is over until next season. My employees (I’m an owner), were so close to making it to the Super Bowl. It’s just unfair how the refs let San Francisco go one and half hours without throwing a pass. That’s cheating and needs to be corrected. Or maybe the NFL didn’t want us to beat the Chiefs by 35 points (42 to 7 would have been my prediction). Just think of the State Farm commercials we could have enjoyed over the next 2 weeks with Aaron and Mahommes.

  13. A Rodgers says:

Dave, it’s your fault. You said you were going to Miami for the game. Don’t you know you’re a jinx on my career. At least I don’t need your help with the ladies… Roar… Oh well, time to enjoy my millions for a few months while you fans actually care, because we really don’t.

  14. Tim says:

Dissapointing performance all around. Even if the offence did score points, we had no chance playing defense like that. Both vikings and packers were pushed around in the run game and it showed how far off both our teams are from being a true contender. With that said, there aren’t too many teams on the level of the 49ers, especially in the nfc. Seahawks, Saints are the only other two who come to mind. I’d say vikings and packers both are in that 2nd tier. I’m shocked at how well this season went and am excited to see what the future holds for this coach and team! Go pack go!

  15. Greg says:

Rodgers salary will be $21.6 million against the cap in 2020, $36.3 million in 2021. There is a buyout in 2022 otherwise he’s $39.9 million in 2022. This is soooooooo delicious. He is getting worse by the game and his pay will skyrocket. Simply delicious!

  16. I4ni says:

What did Jackson think of the game?

  17. Patsfanfirst says:

Now my team went home early but on the flip side in one hall of fame QB I have seen 6 Super Bowl victories and a couple of defeats. I love how packer fans still think and act like Rodgers is the GOAT when he does not hold a candle to my man Brady. Now I’m the first to admit Brady should retire as he is past his prime and you should also start think Rodgers May be too. I’m an honest fan and know when my guy is done do you? At least I can take solace in the fact that my Pats have won more SBs than Rodgers and Favre combined times two. Have a good off season and enjoy 9-7 next year as just like my Pats your teams record was fraudulent all season long.

  18. PackfaninMN says:

Ok, so I know we are all upset, but I would hesitate to call the Vikings loss to SF an “evisceration”. They at least scored in the first half and were only down by 4 at half. Now, the Vikings didn’t score a single point in the second half, but they also lost by 17 points.

Arguably, our pack did MUCH worse. SF was in cruise control the whole second half and even scored another TD and a FG to put a nail in it.

I think we had a “fake 13-3 team” this year. None of the wins we had scream “SB worthy”. We only had a couple wins that had teams even IN the postseason conversation.

The Eagles beat us at home(they almost didn’t even make the playoffs)

Yeah, we beat the Chiefs…without Mahommes…big whoop

    Lost to the frickin Chargers

We beat the Vikings at home by 5, and by 13 at US Bank. whoopdy do…It’s always a crap shoot.

Lost to SF the first time by 29 points. That showed us right there who we are.

We beat the LIONS by 1 point and then 3 points. And one of those games was handed to us by a Flowers hand to the face referee gift from the gods. Total blown calls and we got a win from it.

Having watched Favre’s and Rodgers Prime years, we didn’t have a single game vs a decent team this year that stood out to me like, “wow, this team has something.

The biggest wins we had were both by 18 points. One vs the Raiders @ lambeau (lol), and the other vs the 4-12 Giants. lol

We SEVERELY overachieved and even IF we somehow magically pulled out a win in Santa Clara, there is no way we beat Mahommes.

All I hope for is they either fire Pettine or completely design new schemes. Going to be honest…might be easier firing and starting from scratch with a young team and not get our defense into bad habits.

    My 2 cents.

  19. Bud Grant says:

I don’t understand the cockiness of the Vikings fans on this site,49ers tore us up on the ground also, packers and Bears kicked are ass,We are in cap trouble and Greg look what we’re paying a terrible Cousins, oline is pathetic, secondary sucks,Diggs is a selfish pussy, there sick of playing for Dimmer,Defense is severally overrated, total rebuild,oh yeah we’re way better than the packers,Good God open your eyes, too much purple kool aid!!! Like I’ve said,a real stupid fan base!

  20. PackfaninMN says:

lol. Guy ripping on the Vikings with a Bud Grant name. Yeesh.

    Someone needs a chill.

We just need to look ahead and see what we can improve. There are facts that needs addressing.

    1. With every year passing, Rodgers is getting slower and losing touch. I’ve never seen so many balls from Rodgers sailing WAY off mark.

    2. The Defense is young, but mis-managed. I think Pettine needs the boot.

    3. If Rodgers is your only answer, then DRAFT HIM SOME WEAPONS. Bhaktiari and Bulaga can only hold (literally) for so long. Rodgers needs to dump it fast and not get cute.

    4. Crosby has been great, but don’t underestimate nabbing a steal in the draft this year or next for his replacement. Games under Rodgers are going to be MUCH closer than they have been in the past. And having a clutch LONG kicker could prove VERY valuable.

  21. Rob says:

Well, just as I figured, there are a bunch of gloating Viking fans here whose team is just as home for the super bowl as ours is. Or maybe just one who keeps making up different names while he posts from his mom’s basement while he eats her meatloaf. Anyway, this game shows where the deficiencies are. Martinez needs to be upgraded. We need one more impact defensive lineman, and we need a tight end who doesn’t fall down when someone is within 5 yards of him. A true slot receiver would be welcome too.

  22. WendyfromWaseca says:

Cane we supposedly have a top tier quarterback (the 84 million dollar man) and we don’t win!!

  23. Bud Grant says:

Packfaninmn it’s that easy building a team huh,you must have a crystal ball, living in Minnesota the stupidity is rubbing off on you, should have been a GM,you’re in the wrong profession, ask you’re neighbors how hard it is to win the big one, they should know!!

  24. Voice says:

Gotta love all the armchair GM’s. When the dust settles a little more, I’ll weigh in with some specifics, but I’ll say this much – firing Pettine will do no good. He’s not the problem…the point being is the defense knew full well what was coming and still couldn’t stop it. The 49ers run old fashioned in-your-face football. How sustainable that is in 2020 remains to be seen, but someone will figure it out. Trends are cyclical. With the right combination of personnel and scheme, they can be stopped. Scheme alone won’t do it.

  25. Greg says:

LaFleur questioning the effort. Not a smooth move there rookie coach. I can see questioning the coaching, but I wouldn’t be doing that to your own players.

  26. Purple troll says:

Oh yeah another GM Greg chimes in,its been nothing but turmoil in the queens locker room,Dimmer is always laying the blame on someone else, coaches getting fired and leaving,Diggs whining and, defense wasn’t that good,Dimmer isn’t as smart as you think,6 years what has he done (choke)!!

  27. Elroy from Elroy says:

Yeah another wannabe GM Greg,it wasn’t all ducks and bunnies in that Vikings locker room, team and coaches are sick of Zimmer!! Don’t give up your paper route Greg!!

  28. Greg says:

“That’s something that I’m still trying to figure out right now as we speak,” LaFleur said, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com. “I mean, I don’t understand that because you’re there. You have an opportunity to go to play in a Super Bowl. And for that to happen, it’s extremely … it’s bothersome.”

  29. Purple troll says:

That’s amazing Greg, that’s the same thing Zimmer said after the Eagles blew queens off the field in nfc championship

  30. WendyfromWaseca says:

Hey I’d rather be fishing idiot,How’s Cousins window looking, you’ll have plenty of time for fishing, enjoy the implode!!!

  31. Greg says:

    it’s extremely………it’s bothersome!

  32. Purple troll says:

Yeah we know Greg, that’s what dimmer said ya idiot!

  33. Millelacs Mike says:

Alright!! We promoted Kubiak, lots of sacks coming,Yummy!

  34. Greg says:

But the Packers have Rodgers. Last week he showed that he can still rise up and put together an elite performance when the lights are brightest. And now he gets another chance against the team he grew up rooting for, the team that passed him over on draft day in a matchup that few experts give him a chance of winning. Chip, meet shoulder. bwahbwahbwahbwah

  35. Purple troll says:

What’s Dave supposed to say Greg,he’s a packers fan,you must be to,you hang on every word, what have your quarterbacks done, never a mention about that, stick with Cousins ya Loser and get a Life!!

  36. Greg says:

What’s he supposed to say? We will never know. He wasn’t available to do his show this morning. LULZ Maybe Dave and Barreiro can petition KFAN to have him do a show on the niner loss.(that will go over most of you heads). Dave does not like to miss his shows, or so we are told.

  37. Millelacs Mike says:

They lost, just like Vikings lost, packers and bears kicked our ass, what’s he supposed to talk about, maybe he’s doing something with his family, packers aren’t his whole life like they are for you, people are right, you are a Loser!!

  38. WendyfromWaseca says:

Greg we’ll never be close to packers success, stop letting it eat you up,everyone is right, big time Loser, just like Vikes!!

  39. Bud Grant says:

He already said it Greg right at the very top of post,I quote ( There is no Defense for that Performance) more than you would ever say for our shitty performances, coward Loser, can you read season is over!!

  40. Packerlifer says:

The window is still open but not nearly so wide as before. The Packers have made the playoffs 7 times in 9 seasons since winning SB XLV. They’ve been to 3 NFC Championship Games and 3 more times at least in the Divisional round in that span. That’s a lot of missed chances to “get back to the Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers.” If it’s ever going to happen they must realize that it’s going to have to be within the next 2 seasons. That’s about the time ARod has left but also the ages and contracts of current players they can succeed with and figuring how fast they can complete the missing pieces in draft, free agency and trade. Beyond that point we’ll be in “post-Rodgers” territory regardless of how long ARod continues to play. This year had a lot to commend it but from here on out it’s not going to be enough just to “be there” or “get there.” To borrow a phrase from Hal Scott over half a century about about the Queens: They have to “get to getting.” From top to bottom every member of the organization has to be all in and go all out to get that 14th pro football world championship and 5th all time Super Bowl win to cap the Rodgers era. As of now they’ve got half the defense they need and considering how fast they’ve gotten that half they should be able to make major continuing progress on their d-line and inside linebacking in one or two productive off-seasons. Likewise with the addition of another one or two major playmakers on offense. LaFleur was at a disadvantage in terms of seniority with ARod and Pettine this season but going forward he will need to assert his authority as head coach more to get his top men to adjust and adapt their games a little more and not keep doing the same things and getting the same results. Gutey can’t shy away from stocking the team with talent to the full measure of the sal-cap. There’s no time left to make a dynasty. It may be only one glorious year but that’s what the franchise needs at this time in its 100 year history.

  41. Elroy from Elroy says:

There are 6 teams in pro football chasing their 5th 6th and 7th super bowl win,the Green Bay Packers are one of them, not easy getting there and winning it,be thankful for what we have, some teams have zero,a lot of one of the teams fans come on this site and make stupid comments, you know who you are!!

  42. Paul from Florida says:

I got grief from the Voice about questioning Martinez being to small but I was told he leads the NFL in tackles. Yea 7-10 yds downfield which is exactly why SF ran all over us. I like our Dline and backs but we’re soft in the middle, we need an Urlacher type there.
I’m sorry to say I’ve lost a lot of faith in AR. He and the receivers aren’t on the same page. They don’t come back to the ball, and he throws the ball away quicker and more often than ever. I believe we need to start looking at QB options in the draft to start grooming someone else in.
This game turned out as expected after how SF beat us before and let’s face it, it was pretty surprising that we were the 2nd seed.
No one may read this but on VAC and couldn’t get to this until now.
Eager to see what will change next year, hopefully a new middle linebacker.
