Packers XLV

A Sneak Peek at the Pack's Opening 53

Posted August 26th, 2013 @ 07:08pm

OK, I get it. A lot can happen between now and Saturday, when teams need to get down to their 53-man rosters. But here's an early look at how it could break out:

QB (2): Rodgers and Young. Vince is on a fast track to the backup job and if he performs competently in Kansas City on Thursday night, he will win the job. Look for BJ Coleman to land on the practice squad once again.

RB (5): Lacy, Franklin, Harris, Green and Kuhn. James Starks is the odd man out here, but we'll monitor the severity of Harris' knee injury. My hunch is, Starks is gone either way. It was a nice run and we'll always have Super Bowl XLV, but the Pack appears ready to move on. Revised: With Harris placed on IR on Tuesday, Starks keeps his spot on the roster.

WR (5): Jones, Cobb, Nelson, Boykin and Walker. I'm playing a hunch and leaning toward the team cutting Jeremy Ross, despite the fact that he's the best returner on the team. This position is thinner and the preseason injuries put a premium on good receivers waiting in the wings. Tyrone Walker will get a chance Thursday night to win the fifth spot and I have a feeling he'll grab it.

TE (5): Finley, Mulligan, Quarless, Taylor and Bostick. I think the team will move on from DJ Williams, a good guy, but a guy who hasn't taken a major step forward in three years. Bostick becomes one of the unlikeliest roster survivors, a pass catcher with upside to go along with Mulligan (blocker) and Taylor (special teams ace).

OL (8): Bakhtiari, Sitton, Dietrich-Smith, Lang, Barclay, Newhouse, Van Roten, Taylor. The undrafted Taylor may be a candidate for the practice squad, but I just can't believe the team would enter the season with seven offensive linemen--particularly with the youth and inexperience of this group. Ted Thompson may find a guy on waiver to take eighth spot.

DL (6): Jones, Pickett, Raji, Wilson, Daniels, Jolly. Yes, Johnny Jolly has earned a spot and may be on the field more than you think by the time the team returns from its early bye week. This could actually be a position of strength for the team this season.

LB (10): Matthews, Hawk, Jones, Perry, Francois, Lattimore, Manning, Barrington, Neal, Moses. Rookie free agent Andy Mulumba appeared ready to take Moses' spot, until a knee injury knocked him out last week. Look for the team to stash him on the practice squad if he's not hurt too badly. More depth inside than outside here. If Neal isn't ready to play in a two point stance the team may look for a guy off the street and kick Moses (who's dealing with a toe injury) to the curb.

CB (6): Williams, Shields, Hayward, Hyde, House, Bush. Very deep unit here and it needs to be, with preseason injuries to Williams and Hayward. Hyde has been the most pleasant surprise of the summer and may be on the field more than you think in the opener. Bush continues to be the cockroach of the roster. You can't kill him. He's still too valuable on special teams.

S (3): Burnett, Jennings, McMillain. Burnett's hamstring injury may alter the thinking here, but I think the Packers will start with these three and look to the waiver wire to add one if they need to. I expect a couple of guys (Banjo and Powell) to land on the practice squad, to be on call if there's an injury.

ST (3): Masthay, Goode and Ramirez. The remaining intrigue is at kicker. I'd been saying all summer I didn't think the Packers' kicker was currently on the roster. The late addition of rookie Zach Ramirez shows how up in the air things are. Tavecchio's release on Monday means Ramirez will get every opportunity this week to steal the job from Crosby. I have a sneaking suspicion he'll do it.

IR: Bulaga and Tretter

PUP: Sherrod and Worthy

Read my quote: 'I'd been saying all summer...' I made the call in the summer, not right after the playoff loss. Try a little harder, Cane. It's getting a little stale.

Dude...SERIOUSLY?!?

Looks like Ramirez bombed big time in practice today...something like 6 out of 16. Ouch! And just as fast as he came to town, he's gone. Regardless, all Crosby needs to do is keep it together, and he'll be fine. We all know he has the ability. But then again, it's still almost 2 weeks to go and anything can happen. Dave's assesment of the probable roster get 2 thumbs up from me - I'd go to the season with that crew in a flash. It'll probably work out well having Young as the #2 - having someone who's been there before, and the polar opposite of Rodgers' skill set, in a good way. It also indicates that TT will be taking another QB next April, as it's most likely Young will be wearing #13 in '13 only.

Cool Tramon Williams back pedal attempt, THC. What exactly changed between the playoff loss and the beginning of the summer with regards to Crosby? Did you not like Crosby's vacation destination choice or something?

"I'd been saying all summer I didn't think the Packers' kicker was currently on the roster. " --Actually, no you haven't. I called into your show after the playoff loss last year and said the Pack will cut Crosby and you said they would not. So you're lying.

Hey guys, look where Harrell landed!! J-E-T-S, Jets Jets Jets!! Guess Rex & Co. needed a little insurance with Sanchez hurt. I say good for Graham!

I think that the Packers will try to move Bostick in a trade, before cuts to see if they are able to get another OL. That's a lot of depth at the TE position, and I don't think he is a very consistent special teamer.

I'd probably guess that if Bostick goes, it would be via a cut and not a trade. If other teams share the same opinion of him, it's not likely that someone would be willing to give someone up of a certain value for someone of that particular talent level. The old saying still rings true in this situation..."If you want to get something of value, you have to give something of value". So I think they'll either keep him or cut him. This is part of the reason you see so few player trades in the NFL.

So it appears that Mason Crosby's job status is still up in the air. Apparently the Packers brought in Havard Rugland, aka "Kickalicious", in for an audition today after the Lions released him. If you haven't seen this guy's YouTube video yet, it's very much worth looking up. He does some pretty amazing stuff in the video - how that would translate to a game situation remains to be seen. But at the very least his video is a must-see. Hey...stranger things than this have happened. Should be interesting how this plays out.

The Packers' starting lineup and 53 man roster for 2013 was pretty well known even before training camp opened. That's why we saw so little of the regulars in the preseason games and why the effort to win those games on the part of the coaches was so much less this year. Keeping people from getting hurt in games that don't count was the primary goal

Sooooo...this is getting interesting. Alex Green is gone, as well as Vince Young. Curious moves for different reasons. Green's departure is a little strange with the sudden lack of backfield depth with Harris being put on IR, but maybe TT is thinking McKnight from NYJ will take his place. Although Young didn't exactly light it up, he seemed to be the lesser of 3 evils for the #2 job. So here we are...what's TT going to do? I can't see Coleman getting the job (at least not this season), so will they bring in David Carr, Brady Quinn, or someone else (PLEASE, not the other TT)? The plot thickens...

Yes Johnny Jolly is a player we should all root for. Always nice to give a convicted felon a chance. Multiple drug arrests but hey, he might help the Packers' pathetic run "d"! Stay classy!
