Packers XLV

Not Quite the Same Debut For This Brett.

Posted October 23rd, 2017 @ 02:10am

It was one of those strange Packer Sundays, where fatherhood made my schedule a little goofy. At halftime, I had to take Jackson to Bloomington for a couple of basketball games. So after watching a spirited first half that featured Aaron Jones running wild, Brett Hundley doing his first Lambeau leap and the defense bending but not breaking, allowing just seven points and picking off Drew Brees twice.

Sound like I saved myself a lot of aggravation by missing most of the second half. I managed to catch a chunk of the fourth quarter on my phone from the bleachers. I set my DVR but haven't had a chance to watch it yet. I wanna make sure I have an empty stomach when I do. As expected, the gulf between Brees and Hundley was too great, and ultimately the future Hall of Fame took charge against an overmatched Packers defense.

This was a game where the defense had to stand tall and they weren't able to answer the bell. The two interceptions in the first half masked the issues they had covering the running backs in the screen game early and the running backs on the ground in the second half. The good news is the Packers won't see another QB of Brees' vintage the rest of the year (with apologies to Big Ben).

As far as the offense goes, Jones continues to be a revelation and has cemented his status as the Pack's lead back. 17 carries for 131 yards: that's almost eight yards a pop, highlighted by a 46 yard touchdown run on the game's fist drive. Jones' emergence gives the team hope that the team can lean on the running game, while Hundley gets more comfortable with more playing time.

Hundley was pretty wretched in the passing game; in part because it appeared McCarthy was hesitant to cut him loose. No matter how explosive Jones is, the Packers have to get more production out of their talented trio of receivers--five catches between them won't cut it. I expect Hundley to look a lot more comfortable the next time he takes the field. He has 15 days to study what went wrong, where he can improve and what he needs to do to beat the Lions defense.

This was an opportunity to steal a win at home, riding the emotion of a QB's first career start to take out a team that's traditionally much better at home. But this Saints team has now notched wins in Green Bay and Carolina, along with a neutral field shutout over the 4-2 Dolphins. They appear right now to be the best team in the NFC South.

The Packers couldn't hang with then for 60 minutes and now they have two weeks to figure things out and improve on both sides of the ball. Getting Morgan Burnett back and a healthy offensive line would help as well. We know the margin for error has gotten much thinner for the next six games. They have to play better and need to win two of their next three to keep pace in the North. With home games against the Lions and Ravens and a game in Chicago, two out of three seems possible. It's probably mandatory.

Oh Synner - How could you: "Sound like I saved myself a lot of aggravation by missing most of the second half." Where do your loyalties lie? Priorities, man...PRIORITIES!

Davey is not posting a new blog very quickly here. I'm just not sensing the passion anymore. So this is how it is. I'm disappointed!

So Houston is off the ALL TIME loser list. After the Eagles win the super bowl that will leave the Vikes 3rd biggest losers. How desperate will the fan base be then. Enjoy the next 5 games.

This season is f'd! Can you belive that TT and McFatty have wasted another year of AR prime putting together another yet another group of misfits and mental midgets that have no chance of winning a title? When quality organizations have the good fortune of drafting or aquiring HOF quarterbacks, they parlay that situation into multiple SB championships. The Packers have had back to back HOF QB's and have only managed one ring each. What a waste. We need to fire the GM, coach and front office.

You make fun of PA for selling false hope to the vikes fan base every year, and yet when the precious A-Rodg goes down, you're forced to do the same thing. It is going to be very humorous waiting for you to draw some sort of silver lining out of the embarrassing defeats your team suffers in the weeks ahead. You'll be forced to countdown the games until the pack is mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. But yeah, 13 championships or whatever. Blow pack, blow.

The Packers are a work - or more accurately, a re-work - in progress so making a determination about the entire season on the basis of this game is a bit premature. We need to see a larger sample size so make any definitive conclusions. For 30 minutes the Packers looked and played like a team with energy and determination. Where that team went after intermission is the question and the mystery. Brett Hundley gets a generous C-minus for his first NFL start. He showed the strong arm and athleticism to be in the NFL but accuracy, reading and reacting were lacking and the postgame remarks suggest he was on a tight leash to throw for only 87 yds. Aaron Rodgers didn't play defense, though, and even though it was Drew Brees & Company the Packer defense needed to show better than it did. At Lambeau, outdoors, on real grass;theyhad the chance against Saints' offense and did do the job on it in the first half. While the offense without Aaron Rodgers will be the focus of attention scrutiny on the D shouldn't be excused. If the Packers get defense like they've had for the past 6 years again it will be time for an overhaul. Jettisoning the 3-4 and converting to a 4-3 and bringing in a fresh, dynamic coordinator to put it together.

I watched the Packers as a kid throughout the 80s. Starr, Gregg, Infante....Dickey, Wright, Majkowski. Nary a defense to speak of after Carreker and Tim Harris. This team is not the Packer team of that era. This Packer team, with Hundley given he has the chance to settle down and lead, has so much more to offer and has so much more potential. The defense did no favors from what I could tell from the radio in the second half. Reading here is the first Ive heard that McFatso may have sandwiched the new Brett in an offensive scheme that was conservative at best. Knowing these things, coupled with the fact this O-line is pretty down and out right now - Yes the Packers could be in a world of hurt before much longer, but let the bye come and go and give this train a couple weeks to feel out the tracks. I have seen at least as much good come from Hundley in the less than 7 quarters of play coupled with limited action in the past 3 preseasons that there is reason to believe the kid can play. Vikings fans, enjoy it while it lasts. Purple has played well to date. Remember what happened after 5 and 0?? Thats right, nothing happened! Go Pack Go!

So ....... according to Sinykin ......Dudley sucked in the passing game because I was hesitant to "Cut him loose ? " ....... Somebody get me my bottle of Vicoden ....... MM Out.

Hey, Synny. I'm a transplant from Wisconsin, moved here about 1979. Love all the teams from here, and all they ever do , is let a guy down. 'Cept the Twins twice. I've never been able to cut the cord from the Badgers and Packers, tho. I hear P.A., and Bercich callin' you, the 'Sultan of Smug', and ripping 'Sconi fans for being arrogant and smug, drunks, rubes, you name it. Yet, I've not heard ANYBODY more arrogant or smug than P.A., and especially Bercich. Some Viking fans are horrible, I've come to blows with them over wearing Green and Gold to their bars.... it's all 'Projection'. They think we're arrogant and smug because THEY are, therefor, everybody must be, right? They rip Green Bay for being a hick town, yet the first thiong they gotta do in Spring is go up to Brainerd, or Hibbing...... they rip Green Bay for not being 'diverse', when the biggest portion of the fan base comes from Milwaukee, a town not unlike MPLS...... its all projection. It comes from decades of futility here, and jealousy of The Packers always being in contention. Until now. Oh yeah, we're gonna hear it from them, now. The arrogance will be epic. I get it, I was a Packers fan during the 70's and 80's, they SUCKED. And now, they have to decide if they're an actual team, or, just a bunch of guys playin' alongside Rodgers.... gonna be a rough patch here, meboy!

You can't handcuff a pro quarterback like McCarthy did yesterday, no matter if it is his first start or not. This offense has way too many weapons to do that. Plus, with that game plan, you needed your D to step up, and once again, they didn't, something McCarthy should be used to. Over and over again the Packers defense fails, but Capers is protected, enough already.

on October 23rd, 2017 at 08:26am

Uh boy...and so it begins. I've come to terms with how rough things are going to be over the next few weeks, and I'm taking a "so be it" approach to it, because after all, what can any of us do to change things? And to Vikings fans, I say enjoy it while you can, because history isn't on your side. Remember that when things go to hell in a handbasket much sooner than you think.

on October 23rd, 2017 at 10:58am

Hey Voice......speaking of things going to hell in a handbasket sooner than you think........well, Rodgers is about to be 34 and is going to slow down quickly. You are right, it happens quickly.

I have the day MM is to blame I mean you look at my Pats and even my wife's Vikings and both teams have competent backups. The pats have a starter in the making as a backup and not to mention how many of there backups have went on to start. Hard to feel sorry for a team who had not invested quality picks for the most important position in the game.

on October 24th, 2017 at 02:15pm

Well, I've got my yellow hankie ready to toss at a moment's notice to help your now hapless squad stay meaningful until Rodgers' broken uterus heals. But you've got to give me a little help! I can't do this all on my own. Coach McFlintstone and his dunderhead staff have to do their jobs, and the insanely crappy D have to be able to stop a team every now and again. Sheesh--

on October 24th, 2017 at 11:18am

Da Pack are right in it...the Yikes will collapse just like last year...may even lose to LeBum Jame's Browns...Im callin it 6-10 ...SKOL VIQUEENS!

on October 25th, 2017 at 05:38pm

Everybody remember thier 1st. day on the job? He needs live fire experience so still to be determined. The Queens beat Flacco at home with a bunch of FGs. Congrats on that special team POTW! After your bye week in London you have 4of 5 on the road with a home game against the Rams. It's Halloween it always come down to December football so stay tuned.

I'm sitting here looking at the remaining 9 games ..... are ANY of these games winnable with 39.6 QBR Dudley out there ??? ..... One ...maybe ...14 Dec. at Cleveland .... even that one is not a sure thing as Cleveland has a better Defense than us ....... Where's my bottle of Vicodin ? ...MM Out.

Hi all my great viking rubes. another win yesterday. I wanted to take this time on bye week to tell you all, we have been very lucky so far this season. I know we lost our qb, but Case is doing better because he can scramble, most of you don't realize this. also, we lost a rb, big loss, that is why we got Murray. BUT, what you need to see, which none of you do. is in 1st game with saints, they lost both of there tackles by mid 2nd qtr..in 2nd game we just got beat by Pitt. in 3rd game we played well against TB, they were w/o there best d tackle and martin the rb, and starting cb also. our 4th game we played like dogs. lions beat us. then comes the Packers. we get a good shot on there qb, and drive him to the turf, even though Barr took 2 steps after he threw the ball. I watched it 4 times, we got away with flag there. nice he is gone though right??? they were w/o 5 starters that day already.we had to do what we did to get this win. then we play the bears, with new starter and there middle lb was out cause of hit on packers wr,the week b4. thanks for that Packers. and 2 starting wr's out. then he throws us the ball to get win. lucky to get that win. next come the ravens. there out all there starting wr's except one, we knock him out on 1st play, bye bye wallace. we win ugly. damn kicker makes all the field goals and misses extra point again. not happy about that. then comes the hated browns, there win less, and we get them in lovely London instead of dog pound. there best de end is out Garret and starting cb, Courtney. and of course Thomas,LT. best player they have is out also. I.m letting you know, I am a great coach. I/m still working on time clock though I screw that up a lot. but we have gotten awfully lucky so far this year. don't just pout about us losing 2 players, look who we play. how many guys have been out for the teams we played?and don't get to full of yourselves like last year.we are not the GREEN BAY PACKERS they have 4 super bowls and and 13 titles we have NONE. enjoy your winter. please don't be mad if we lose 5 out of 6 games coming up after bye. Let's hope some more guys get hurt b4 we play them. Go Us.

I sort of doubt that's Mike Zimmer, whose team sits on top of the division. My team sucks hairy wiener and a W is a W.
