Where's Marvin Gaye When You Need Him?

Posted October 8th, 2018 @ 01:10pm

It's fitting that the Packers were in Motown on Sunday, as Marvin Gaye's classic, "What's Going On" would serve as the soundtrack of the game for the Pack and its fans.

From the gaffe on the Lions' first punt that served them up on the Pack's yard line, to the two strip sacks of Aaron Rodgers, to Mason Crosby's inexplicable meltdowns, this was a performance that won't soon be forgotten.

We watched a lot of bad football last season when Rodgers was sidelined, and we've seen more than our share already this season: witness the first half against the Bears, the second half against the Vikings and pretty much the whole Washington game. But what transpired at Ford Field will leave a bad taste in our mouths for quite some time, and how the team responds will tell the story of the 2018 season.

There are plenty of elements of concern after this abomination, but it starts with the play of Rodgers. On a day when he was without two of his top three receiving options, he needed to be razor sharp, but he wasn't close to that. The knee injury that has caused him to miss practice time during the week has stunted his progress in getting in sync with his receivers, most notably Jimmy Graham (who doesn't resemble the version we saw in New Orleans) and the rookies, who were asked to step up and, for the most part, did their jobs against the Lions.

Rodgers shouldered plenty of blame for his uneven performances so far this season, but the time to get things squared away is running out. With the easiest game left on the schedule coming up next Monday (home against the 49ers) and then the much needed bye, the Pack will need to get healthy and get their act together or their season could go down in flames before the first snowflakes fall.

To get to ten wins, the Pack would need to win eight of their last 11 games. That means they would need to be perfect at home and then find three road wins. As a reminder, the remaining road slate takes them to LA (Rams), New England, Seattle, Minnesota, Chicago and New York (Jets). They will need to play infinitely sharper if they expect to go 3-3 in those games.

Now, on to Crosby. The Pack's all-time leading scorer had the worst game of his life. Never would have believed we'd see him miss four field goals and an extra point indoors in perfect conditions. Yes, he's working with a new snapper and holder this season, but it appeared that they were not the problem. You have to chalk it up to 'just one of those days' and assume he'll put it behind him. The fact that he made his last attempt in the final seconds should at least provide a modicum of confidence as he moves on to next week. As I tweeted during the game, if this is how Vikings fans feel every time their kicker takes the field, I couldn't take it.

Lost in the haze of the three first half turnovers and Crosby's foibles was the fact that the defensive effort was good enough to get the win. The run defense, minus one 24 yard Kerrion Johnson run, was solid and the pass defense was okay. Emerging star Kenny Golladay made some big plays, but Golden Tate and Marvin Jones were pretty silent. There is still a lack of big plays being made by guys like Matthews, Perry, Daniels and Clinton-Dix. They've looked great against young, inexperienced QBs, but have failed to make game-changing plays against the veterans they've faced. A turnover in the second half when the Pack was frantically trying to get back in the game could have made things interesting.

Think about it, the Pack gained 540 yards in offense, never punted the ball and lost by eight points. Has that ever happened before? I doubt it.

Bottom line, so far this season, the Packers look like an average team that is destined to finish around .500. There is time to turn things around, but they'll need their quarterback to get healthy and play like the all-timer that he is, their special teams units to get things cleaned up and their defense to start making game-changing plays.

Our hope is that the Packers can move on from "What's Going On" to "Dancing in the Streets." But for now, the jukebox appears to be stuck.

Hi there, long time listener first time caller. Just wanted to say there's more talent in me than the other 52 guys on your roster not named A-A-Ron. You know the last time the Pack lost 3 straight to Detroit? 1991..... Anyway, I wanted to ask, how do your fans reconcile making fun of almost losing to the Vikings on missed kicks now that the disease has spread to your beloved Crosby, Still, Nash and Young? I'll hang up and listen.

How many FG's did Crosby miss, I lost count. Crosbyshanks on October 8th, 2018 at 12:36pm I think he just missed another

So, that was one of the biggest let downs of the year to say the least. Kinda like how Farve came back wearing purple and whooped us. Only the Packers front office could have one of the best QBs of all time and fail to put a team around him. Lets hope this trend does not continue. (Read first letters of each sentence)

Former New England coach ... I'm sure they manipulated the footballs on the field goal attempts 😆

We will not be ditching Crosby after one bad game. Although his worse game ever came on a day when the rest of team was just not good enough. There is a lot to be said about having to kick that many field goals in the first place. I said before the first drive was over that Rodgers didn't look into it. I don't think he likes to direction the offensive scheme has gone, nor the "talent" we picked up at wide receiver. You get the feeling he'd be a lot happier with Jordy still around. I wonder if he's hitting a generational difference with the young players, or if all three are a mirage of talent created by statistics. The defense was put in one bad spot after another and had a hard time winning. Given 75 yards to defend they do OK, but the need the offense to score TD and eat clock. Is this team any good? I don't know, but if the answer is no then we'll have a new coach next year.

Davy....First of all thank you for putting on the Packer fan get together at the Park Tavern. It was a good time to see some of the regulars and meet some new people. Too bad the Pack could not oblige. First...let me try and unclog that stuck jukebox. Here are some Marvin Gaye classics for some of the Packers..."Mercy, Mercy, Me" for Mason Crosby...."Lets Get It On" for Aaron Rodgers...."Aint No Mountain (Hopefully) High Enough" for the whole team. Someone also had the classic "Where Are You" for Matthews, Perry,Daniels ,and Clinton-Dix. This jukebox needs to get unstuck in a hurry or we may not have anything left in it but "one hit wonders" GO PACK GO !!

Wow, you guys really suck.

First off, the analogy between your team and MoTown songs is incredible strained. That shit might have earned you an A in 8th grade remedial English but it's nothing but grade A bullshit here. (See, that's how it's done!) As far as the Packers go, they suck. Rodgers had digressed from Pure God to just really really great, and that's not good enough to prop up the terrible roster the incompetent Packers management has shackled him with. But look on the bright side, they can save a few bucks by cutting Crosby and signing Daniel Carlson. It'll be the same end result in the kicks but it might give you enough cap space to sign a white full back so all your redneck fans have something to cheer about as the wheels fall off the Packers bandwagon. Enjoy last place!

Oh synner - you embarrassing apologist. Your team is going into full rebuild, but the QB is keeping things afloat. Everyone but you sees it. Welcome to 8-8 purgatory.

The problem with this team is coaching and a shitty roster. McCarthy sucks. The defense is no better than it has been for forever. Rodgers being healthy isn't the problem either, the fact that the roster as a whole sucks is GBs problem. If he isn't razor sharp they lose. He's got to be tired considering he's been carrying McCarthy's fat ass along with the rest of the team for a decade. Crosby - lol... Marvin Gaye does not approve this blog and agrees that the Packers suck and are propped up by an elite QB. He also said the author of this blog and all the other mouth breather sconis suck as well.

I wouldn't worry too much about only tied for the 3rd worst kicking game in NFL history (others were in 60's and 70's for reference). I would worry about having a really bad OL, literally zero pass rush (really surprised Perry has failed so badly, you would think with a 10M deal and next year at 14.75M he would be good. Can't cut him which sucks because his dead cap hit this year is 21.4M). Jimmy at 10M as well, ouch. It likely forces the front office to trade arod to NE after this year to replace Brady. Likely can start the rebuild fresh with Kizer.

If I were Rodgers, I would fire his agent immediately for allowing Rodgers to get stuck to this ship as it is sinking. Rodgers could have gotten the same money anywhere with competent coaching and management to boot.

Really ashamed of this team and to make things worse I tend to savage a lot of brats when I'm down in the dumps. Likely have a whole package and 12-15 Leinie Shandy's to wash them down too. I sad and it's your fault pukers!

Does this game create even more tension between Rodgers and that clown of a coach? While the DB's may get better, relying on rookies to play well against elite WR's is a recipe for disaster. How many FG's did Crosby miss, I lost count.

There's no denying the Packers once again squandered the opportunity to position themselves well for the season but slow starts have, unfortunately, been more the rule than the exception during the McCarthy era in Green Bay. They were 3-3 to start the year they won the Super Bowl in 2010. They were written off at 5-6-1 in 2013 yet wound up winning the Division. Two years ago they were given up for dead at 5-6 after 3 straight blow-out losses and then ran the table to the division title and the NFC Championship Game. There are currently only 4 teams in the NFC with better records than the Packers. Only 2 - Rams & Saints - are more than one game better. Only one is in the Packers' division and they've already beaten the Bears. The offense is moving the ball, but has fixable issues with finishing drives with scores. Especially scoring td's. Personnel issues on defense loom as the more serious problem. While Mason Crosby's bad day Sunday can, for now, be considered an anomaly his misses this season so far have left 16 pts on the field that are the direct difference between 2-2-1 and 4-1 and 3-0 in the division and 1-1-1. It's far too early to bail on 2018 and begin talking free agency and draft in 2019.

well, the vikes rubes sure made me look good, I just said before the games this weekend, that where did all the queen fans go? as soon as they win and we lose , THERE BACK.. have fun boys,. on the game, the d played fine, Dix made another mistake in end zone, but I thought they played well enough to win. 280 yds given up, we had 550, turnovers and bad call on punt on king, didn't help. which, referee told Tramon it hit lions guy 1st, and they still got call wrong. of course, Crosby was horrible. even after 12 years , they still are so sensitive ,if one thing goes bad, it gets into there heads. kickers are amazing breeds. I love 83 , still reminds me of John Jefferson from back in the 80's. just hope we stay healthy and we will be fine. need to win 10 games some how, and get in dance. I will take my chances with 12. I will say, he is not playing great, good ,not great. he has missed some open guys and throws he usually makes, so some is on him. Graham has played just like I thought, when we got him,. wish we would have kept Jordy. has 3 td's in last 3 games for raiders. I said at the time, as most were all happy about him, I was worried he was getting older and lost a step. 2 drops in end zone. should have paid Cook 2 more ml. and we would have been a lot better off. . enjoy the season. Packers win 30 to 21, Crosby makes 3 of 4 fg's. Go Packers.
