Pack vs. Chiefs Tonight: What to Watch

Posted September 2nd, 2010 @ 06:09pm

A week ago, we saw the starters play into the third quarter against the Colts. In tonight's preseason finale, they'll get one series and then it will be up to the reserves to help the coaches decide which 22 need to be lopped off the team by the deadline on Saturday.

There are a few things to pay attention to however. I'll watch the punters deliver their closing arguments to prove who deserves the job--that is, if the Pack is forced to punt against the Chiefs D. It appears Masthay has the slight edge heading into the game. You'd think six months of work would provide the answer, but I can understand the logic of wanting to see how these guys perfom when the lights are brightest.

With Will Blackmon's knee not responding from surgery, WR Jason Chery will get another shot at a roster spot as a return guy as he will get chances at KR and PR tonight. He begged the coaches to give him a chance against the Colts and took one to the house. One more big return tonight and he might be the return guy in Week 1.

Kregg Lumpkin will get a lot of work at RB tonight and if he doesn't make the most of it, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Pack pick up a veteran off the waiver wire.

There are muliple reports out there that teams have shown an interest in a couple of reserve offensive lineman: Giacamini and Dietrich-Smith. If either has a stellar game, the Pack will try to move them, hopefully for an OLB, CB or safety.

Undrafted rookie Sam Shields will get a lot of snaps at corner tonight. Since it appears he may grab the nickel job until Al Harris returns, I'm looking for him to get all the experience he can possibly get before he faces Andy Reid's prolific and creative offensive gameplan in the opener.

Finally, I'm looking for no carts on the field, no injuries to dampen the optimism that surrounds Titletown as we head into the '10 season.
