Packers XLV

Ranking the Potential Packer Playoff Foes.

Thought I'd take a few minutes and think about who I'd most and least like to see the Packers host in the divisional round next weekend. There are four possibilities: the Bears, Rams, Buccaneers and WFT. I'm ranking them in order of preference.

1. Da Bears: Conventional wisdom says you don't want to play a team that you've swept in the regular season. It makes sense and usually I'd abide by it. But of the four contenders, give me Mitch and company for a third time. The Packers hold a spell over their neighbors to the South, and though they are the team that would be most comfortable with the weather conditions, they have no answer defensively for Aaron Rodgers. The Pack's D would flood the box and dare Trubisky to try his luck downfield. At least a couple would find their way into Packer defensive backs' hands.

2. WFT: This is actually the team I think the Packers will face. That's right, I'm calling for an upset of Tom Brady and the Bucs. That's only if Alex Smith plays, which remains in doubt as I write this. This is a team on the rise and Chase Young will be in consideration for defensive player of the year every season he plays. The defensive line is loaded with first rounders and can make things difficult for mortal offensive lines and QBs. Of course, those are the strengths in Green Bay and I don't think they can keep the Pack down all game long. Flip side, their offense is pedestrian and relies on a lot of underneath stuff. Their one true downfield weapon, Terry McLaurin would be left alone on Jaire Island.

3. LA Rams: This would be a matchup of strength on strength, with the Rams' tough defense matched up against the Pack's high flying offense. How would the Pack's interior handle Aaron Donald? Would shutdown corner Jalen Ramsey follow Davante Adams around and force Rodgers to find other guys? Would Jared Goff be back from injury and would it matter? They have some nice receiving options and rookie Cam Akers is coming on, though dealing with a high ankle sprain. This warm weather crew might hang with the Pack for a while, but not for 60 minutes.

4. Tampa Bay: By no means am I terrified of a rematch of the Bucs. My guess is that this will be the most popular upset prediction next weekend by the national media by virtue of what happened in the regular season meeting. Brady has gotten better and better as the season's gone on and he's not used to losing on wildcard weekend. Hell, he's not used to playing on wildcard weekend. The key will be the pass rush, for both teams and whether the Bucs can run the ball. Tampa has playmakers on all three levels of the defense, and the stable of pass catchers is as good as any team in the playoffs. But over the course of the season the only team with a winning record that they beat was the Pack. The weather will favor the home team and having around ten thousand fans on hand won't hurt either.

I don't see any of these four teams ending this magical Packers season next weekend. But if you consider the Pack will face either Tom Brady or the likes of Alex Smith, Jared Goff or Mitch Trubisky, I think it's safe to say we'd like to see some team spring the upset this weekend.

It's the Rams! The third time the Packers will play them in a playoff game. The Packers beat them 28-7 in the 1967 Western Conference Playoff at Milwaukee County Stadium. The first regularly scheduled playoff game prior to the Championship in NFL history. When the Rams were in St. Louis their "Greatest Show on Turf" team handed the Pack their biggest playoff defeat ever 45-17. The Packers committed 8 turnovers in that game, Favre threw 6 INT's and had 3 pick sixes The game was otherwise closer than the score: Green Bay led in yds. 383-292, first downs 19-13 and held a 5 minute time of possesion advantage.

I was wrong. I called it for Tampa weeks ago. We may still see them. I guess we should hope for that. I think they are probably the second most complete team left, in that otherwise we aren't playing.

So by now we know its the Rams and we unsure when THC will post with this Saturday game. I will be surprised (and delighted) if the Packers' offense scores more than 28 points against this Rams' defense. I do think we can hold them to less than that. I see the weather being a factor in special team and hope it creates some shorter fields for our Offense. I think we can handle their offense. It will be up to LaFluer to game plan enough to neutralize (or avoid) Donald. I would like to see 4 to 6 other Packers catch the ball. I think Adams can get 6 for 70 yards. What will be interesting is if he can the usual 5 first downs that comes with that. I like the idea bunching Adams up on one side with 2 other receivers and using it to get the ball else where. 24 -17 Packers. This is the Playoffs. It's not supposed to be easy.

Were on same page again LDF. It has to be 2 and 3 step drops with lots of crossing routes underneath when they play man to man. Which they do a lot. If they can confuse them some and rub them off each other something could pop open. This is where Lazzard is good at. Then 2 times a quarter take a chance on a deep throw to 17 or MVS and hope he catches it, with 12 rolling out and getting sometime from Donald. They have to run the ball, even if they don't get much, to set up that deep cones they do take. 17 scares me the most on there team other then Akers. Woods is very crafty and great with run after the catch. Hopefully Kupp's knee is not perfect yet and slow him down a step. Our d has to paly like the last 2 games and next to get to the Bowl. Love to see a couple end arounds again. been awhile to slow that defense down some also. If turnovers are even, We should win 24 to 20. But my biggest prediction and I will bet my house is, if we win we will have 8 to 10 post on here. IF we lose there will be 25. All from Minny enjoying there envy and jealousy again. Mark it down. Go Packers

We respect them all, and we fear none of them. I have no preference for who it might end up being. BRING 'EM ON!!!

For the many times the Packers have been to the playoffs over the last nearly 30 years now this is only the third time they've held "the #1 seed." The first time in 1996 they won the Super Bowl. The second in 2011 their 15-1 team was "one and done." They've had a first round "bye" 4 times and lost a Super Bowl and 3 NFC Championship Games. I suspect the coaching staff is doing most of their preliminary work this week prepping for Tampa Bay.
