Brady May Be the GOAT, but Pack's Coaches Wear the Goat Horns After This One.
Posted January 25th, 2021 @ 12:01am
I don't even know where to start. All I know is, this will not be a long post. So many infuriating aspects to this game. So many boneheaded plays and decisions.
I'll start where it pretty much ended: Matt LaFleur's decision to trot out Mason Crosby on fourth and goal with a shade over two minutes to play. Really Matt? You're going to give the ball back to Tom Brady and trust your defense to get a stop? You're going to take the MVP off the field, after a season where he directed the best red zone offense in the league? Not to mention, your defense was being forced to use Ty Summers at inside linebacker. That is less than optimal when you need to make a season-saving stop.
Even if you turn the ball over on downs, you still pin Brady back deep with a chance to get the ball back one last time. There was no way Brady wasn't going to run out the clock. Granted, the late pass interference call on Kevin King was a tough way for the game to end. Yeah, he grabbed his shirt, but they were letting defensive holding go all afternoon. Both Davante Adams and Allen Lazard were mugged at key moments, but they were letting them play. The inconsistency is what's so maddening.
The end of the first half was just as destructive. Why didn't Mike Pettine have his defense in zone, making sure the Bucs couldn't throw over the top, with eight seconds left and no timeouts? It may cost him his job. It was that big a mistake. I also think he should have had Jaire shadowing Mike Evans from the start. He's the only true outside threat in that offense. That touchdown to put the Bucs up 11 was a clear signal that this was not going to be the Pack's day.
And after Aaron Jones fumbled coming out of half-time to up the lead to 18, it looked like curtains. But lo and behold; Brady, who had gone 392 straight passes without a pick started throwing them up for grabs. Three interceptions and the Pack scored a grand total of zero points. They followed up two of them with three and outs. Just didn't capitalize on the opportunities.
The Pack won the turnover battle, won the time of possession and outgained them. The Bucs pass rush made just enough big plays, with five sacks. This talented group of pass rushers was too much for the Pack's makeshift offensive line, a unit that really missed David Bakhtiari on this day.
Also, I'm pretty sure the Kevin King era in Green Bay ends after this one. If they only sign one free agent between King, Aaron Jones and Corey Linsley, King comes in a distant third. Gonna need to find another corner. Again.
It really just came down to this: Bruce Arians trusted his GOAT to make a big play at the end of the half. And LaFleur didn't let his GOAT try to make a game tying play at the end of the game. Like I said, infuriating.
Four title game appearances in the last seven years and zero wins. No other NFC team has been in more than one of these since '14, so it points to an organization that has consistently been in contention. But the bottom line is they fell once game short of the Super Bowl. Again. And this time the stars were pretty much aligned. But the Pack didn't rise to the challenge.
This one stings, no two ways around it.
I LIED. I had to write about getting J.J.WATT. Most of you know, I said 10 years ago to give up the the 1st 4 rounds of draft picks to move up and get him. and all of you said I was nuts. After 3 Defensive MVP's and great guy in community. I think you see I was right on that one. I don't care what they have to get rid of. Pick him up for 3 year contract with option for 3rd year. I get this feeling he will sign with Pittsburg though to be with his other 2 brothers. Please do something right after screwing up last year in the draft.
larryon February 12th, 2021 at 12:10pmWait a minute Davey! Did you say on your show today that you think LeRoy Butler should get in, but you are not into Jared Allen getting in. How do you have a show? Do you know the lengths we went to cover up the holding that was done on Allen by a certain nameless team. I had to work hard behind the scenes on that one. Take a vacation Davey, you need to get away. Yes to Butler, but no to Allen. BWAHBWAHBWAH
Roger Goodellon February 6th, 2021 at 12:29pmjust heartbroken. Six incomplete passes in goal to go when we had been so good there all year. It will take a long time to get over this one. Not as bad as 2014, but a close second.
Don Pultson January 24th, 2021 at 06:59pmTHC--I'm honestly at a loss for words with you. You picked your team to WIN in 2011 vs NYG, 2012 vs SF, 2013 vs SF, 2014 vs Seattle, 2016 vs ATL, 2019 vs SF, and now 2020 vs Tampa Bay. STOP BEING A RIDICULOUS HOMER! NO IDEA WHAT ELSE TO TELL YOU!
Caneon January 24th, 2021 at 07:29pmGod this was sweet to watch...best player in the league will endure yet another season where he isnt in the SB. This game may have set the GB record for most holding penalties that weren't called, you can sell that "makeshift OL" narrative someplace else, were all full up here! They were allowed to chokeslam the Bucs DL which doesn't take much talent.
Tentoon January 24th, 2021 at 07:39pmNow the boneheads will come out on this site. Led by the head bone...Cane....go back to your empty Viking trophy room. As to this game...It was the three headed bad omen. Marquette and Wisconsin basketball and Green Bay football all lost at home as favorites within about a 30 hour span. Key plays in the Packer game...I disagree with Davy...going for the FG was the right decision. With the 2 minute warning you had 4 timeouts. Defense just could not make the stops on 3rd down...King giving up TD, Jones fumble, going 3 and out after 2 Brady picks. Not having Bak caught up to us in the protection . Hopefully we have not seen the last of Rodgers as a Packer. He was undecided after game as to his future as a Packer. King will be gone. We will see about Jones,Jamal Williams,Linsley, and a few others. Pettine should be gone as d Coordinator along with special teams coach. It was a fun year. We enjoyed the MVP season of Rodgers and Adams super year. On to the draft and many team decisions. Thank you for a fun year. GO PACK GO !!
OLD SOUTH SIDE GUYon January 24th, 2021 at 08:00pmI dont think the beloved Arodg can take much more of the pack front office ineptitude. Lefleur is a terrible coach and the GM doesnt know how to draft. Let the Jordan Love era begin!
Hegoneon January 24th, 2021 at 08:30pmThe NFC title game has become a wall the Packers can hit but not breach or scale. I sensed they were going to lose from the start by how they came out onto the field. There was little energy, no swagger, they were put on their heels from the get go. Very different from the Rams the prior week or Tennessee a few seeks before. Why? Perhaps it's connected to the club's approach to keeping the team "young" and a perenniel playoff contender but timidity about going more boldly in free agency when the moment to strike is at hand. A young team and young coaching can falter when being big at the big moment is needed. I hope the fallout and hangover from this one isn't like what followed the loss in Seattle 6 years ago. The Packers were at least still standing when 29 other teams had fallen. The brass ring was once again within their reach but alas exceeded their grasp. How many others can say as much? The Queens? Ha!.
Packerliferon January 24th, 2021 at 08:50pmDave is this your toughest loss as a fan? Tougher than the Giants overtime title game loss? For me it is because of the decision by the head coach on 4th and goal
Thomason January 24th, 2021 at 08:58pmAnyone every heard of the expression, "Take a Knee?" We are kindred spirits more than you know. Only difference is you have Mr. Smug as your mouthpiece. Hurts so good!
Viking Fanon January 24th, 2021 at 09:12pmAt that point of the game you have to reduce the number of scores you need or cut what you need from a TD to a field goal. In that situation the Packers did neither. It's unfathomable
Kevin Eon January 24th, 2021 at 10:16pmHaha. Rodgers will never win another Super Bowl in Green Bay. This was his best chance and the choke artists put together his best performance. 1-4 in championship games. Haha. Well back to watching my chiefs kick butt.
Haha manon January 24th, 2021 at 10:21pmWhy do we focus on calls, plays, Viking fans, THC and what ifs? The focus has to be on how not to ever let this happen again but it keeps happening! We have wasted one of the best QBs careers and I do not believe that we can win the Power Ball QB lottery again. This has been such a great team to watch over the years but I struggle to think about the future of mediocrity.
Why?on January 25th, 2021 at 03:26pmWell Greg,(Roger Goodell) Voices opinion is valued on this site,he’s a true Packers fan, you’re just a short little man full of envy, jealousy and hatred,it’s hard getting to the super bowl let alone winning it,you should know that after 59 years of losing, the packers by far have been the better organization,at least we have something to hang our hats on,you have nothing, nada, zero, zilch!!
Elroy from Elroy on January 25th, 2021 at 05:24amDave — you’re a worse homer than Paul Allen
Steveon January 25th, 2021 at 05:48amThis one about as bad as the Seattle loss years ago. Pettine and King both gone next year. Tony Dungy called the coverage before the half the worst defense scheme he has ever seen for that situation. And thanks to LaFleur and the Refs for bad calls.
Former Bay View Guyon January 25th, 2021 at 06:05am"Packers will ROLL, they come across as the more focused team"...I totally proved that I'm not a great NFL mind, and those words are NOT tasting good at all! HEY, welcome back to the discussion Vikings fans. Long time, no see. I'm not as offended as most that we went for the FG late, as the decision had a chance to look smart until the ref finally decided to take the flag out of his pocket (so much for the Pack always getting the calls at Lambeau). But the reality is that we should not have allowed the game to come down to depending on the defense to make a season-saving stop on the GOAT (the game would come down to that even if we did get the TD + 2-point conversion rather than a FG). The two 3-and-outs after picks, the TD at end the 1st half, and like Larry, I too was screaming at the TV when they went for 2 towards the end of the 3rd quarter. If our team were wearing purple with horns on their helmets and played this game indoors, the local excuse-o-meter would spit out a classic "we beat ourselves" . Last season ended sour, yet I was left with a feeling that the team overachieved a bit and should build momentum into this season. That momentum did carryover, but I'm now left with a feeling this was a completely missed opportunity that may not present itself again for who knows how long. I think we can reload and I hope Rodgers doesn't mentally check out, but only time will tell. In the meantime let's enjoy the Super Bowl, remind those close to us that we love them, move on from COVID, debate on who we should've drafted, have a pleasant summer, then resume our status as the NFL's best fanbase come August. GO PACK GO!
MajikMan7on January 25th, 2021 at 06:20pmErin will look good in Purple next year... he's gonna pull a Favre
sven veaderon January 25th, 2021 at 06:44amGood game yesterday. It sounds like Rodgers and LaFleur have a rift. I wonder if Rodgers will ask for a trade. He didn't look happy in his presser. Maybe he will go to the 49ers if Lynch can pull a deal.
BucsFanDaveon January 25th, 2021 at 07:21amOut of all the championship games, this one was their best chance. Anyone who thinks they had a chance in 2016 against atlanta or last year against SF is delusional. Unlike the last couple, they had a home game against a team that was about equal to them. The hard part was playing from behind the entire game. This team is built on getting an early lead and letting the run game grind it out, they just had to play out of their element, and if it wasnt for the GOAT throwing 3 "cousins-like" picks, it would have been a for sure blowout. Rodgers probably will never get to another Super Bowl, but that doesnt mean he isnt a great QB, just instead of being on the same level as Brady. He is more on the same level as Favre, Brees, Marino, Wilson. Which is still very good company!
Timon January 25th, 2021 at 07:45amRodgers has no one to blame but himself. He couldn’t get it into the endzone repeatedly. He also went 3 and out back to back drives with the chance to take the lead. Brady took advantage of turnovers. Rodgers was unable to take advantage of Brady’s turnovers.
GA Skolon January 25th, 2021 at 08:47amHere's a stat for yuh. Feel free to fact check it yourself, Google is your friend. Sharron is now 0-50 against winning teams, while being down going into the 4th quarter. 0-50. He is also 75th, tied with Trent Dilfer for 4th quarter come backs. I dont know about you, but thats not goat play, thats not MVP worthy, and regardless of stat padding, its not Hall of Fame worthy either. Reality hits hard, Sharron is everything for this team, and at the same time, he is nothing. This is sempiternal. Not sure if anyone in Wisconsin would know what that word means, again, google is your friend. And with that, I purpose a 5th option on the Poll, Discount Double Check. There is no Rodgers rate.
RealityCheckeron January 25th, 2021 at 08:54amWelp. it's over for green bush for the next 20 years. Way way over the cap, no defense, terribad coach who doesn't go for it when you have to 1M/1M times. Going back to the dark ages, gonna be David Whitehurt's lacky kid at qb, more fumblers at RB, drafting crapola. Barooooooooooooooooooooo!
Big 5on January 25th, 2021 at 09:42amWhat an absolute waste of talent .... Favre and Rodgers should have 10 SB total and they choke choke choke choke choke choke over and over and over
Markon January 25th, 2021 at 09:47amDisappointed in the Packers not being able to carry the NFC North in the conference championship game, again. The front office alienated the teams best player in the draft by moving up in the draft to select his successor. They didn't draft one of the many great receivers who would have helped the passing game. The defense let the team down and that coverage before the half was bad and dug too deep of a hole for the offense. Tackle Miller and they would have been forced to kick the FG. Then the red zone debacle. Sure, they didn't get the TD but the decision to kick the FG was the coach throwing in the towel. The Packers had the top Red Zone offense in the league. The defensive back held the receiver and the offense never got to touch the ball again. The Packers were outcoached in this game, embarrassing for the #1 seed to make so many poor decisions which ultimately cost the chance to win the game. Now Rodgers is pissed at management and who could blame him as this was his opportunity to get back to the Super Bowl. Has to be tough on his mind thinking of how the Packers have wasted one of the best QBs in the league. If they want to call GB Title Town, management should actually build a team that can win the title versus getting close and faltering. At least McCarthy was able to win a title and then they ran him out of town. Wouldn't it be something to have a DC who could put a game plan together against a good team. King had his problems but where was his safety help? Packers let a rare opportunity slip away down their leg. Hope LaFleur can coach up Love better than Rodgers.
Jakeon January 25th, 2021 at 09:50amOn a day when the actual GOAT gifted the Packers interceptions on 3 consecutive possessions this team still found a way to lose their 4th NFCCG in 7 years, which is impressive in a Buffalo Bills of the 90's way. Losing this game has also opened Pandora's shitbox with Rodgers, Jones, and a number of others who may have played their last game as Packers. Based on his somber, morose post game interview, Rodgers is seemingly standing on the shitledge considering jumping out of the sinking Packer shitship as it sails into the oncoming shit-typhoon. Where do the Packers go from here and how can they get over the hump? No one knows for sure but the Packers just let a golden opportunity to win another SB slip right through their shithooks in stunning fashion.
Grandma Deathon January 25th, 2021 at 09:52amWow! Just Wow! What a dumpster fire this season just became. Another season of our Diva HOF QB's career wasted. Now he wants out. We ditch the old coaching regime for a "smarter" staff who piddles the NFC championship down their legs. The Puke and Booger colored faithful are angry...chasing said coaching staff thru the streets of this small Wisconsin hamlet. There is NO JOY in Mudville.
Barf Starron January 25th, 2021 at 10:15amI almost had the score right. But wrong way. One thing I knew I would be right on is, all the minny fans that would be on here when we lose. Makes me laugh, that's one good thing to laugh about. Everyone has forgot about one thing, Even THC. A big play in the game and I screamed and yelled at the tv and my wife at the time. Is kick the extra point. I know Brown should have caught it. BUT, why?. I told my wife before the play, If they don't get it,. And TB kicks a FG now your down 8. stupid. They never think about the other team scoring again. COACHING. If they were down 7 at the end I guarantee they would have went for it on 4th down and there would be no decision to make. FUNNY how everyone misses that. Also THC kept saying all week 23 would be on Evans. I knew he wouldn't cause of size difference and he plays the left side all the time. KING is gone. Again Bad coaching. Hell I would have played Tramon Williams after that 1st td he gave up. YOU could see he could not run and had bad back for 3 days before. The only Solace to take Packer Fans is KC would beat us and they will beat TB 41 to 24. Keep that in mind. So minny would have more fun enjoying our losses instead of there own team winning attitude. 12 played great 1st half, horrible in 2nd. 3 times inside the 10 he could have ran. On 3rd down on last drive he could have ran to at least the 2 if didn't get in. Instead he forces it to 17 with 2 guys on him. Again. then they would have went for it on 4th down. So many things the media and people miss surprises me sometimes. Oh Well, another fun season, With this virus world were in right now. I'm just glad we had a season at all and was very entertaining. On my last prediction of the year to reality checker. You are the same guy that would run over your mother to get a ticket if 12 signed with the vikings wouldn't you? Just like Favre. You guys are so easy to read . Envy and jealousy will never stop. I wonder what is on the vikings website right now. -------------. Go Packers
larryon January 25th, 2021 at 12:24pmThe people complaining about Vikings trolls seem to have forgotten that the Purple kicked your ass at Lambeau too. It didn't even feel like a difficult beat.
Delta 8on January 26th, 2021 at 01:29pmWhen your a championship winning franchise you have to expect what comes out of the mouths of Vikings trolls, there franchise isn’t relevant and never has been, nobody writes about them or even cares, biggest thing for that franchise was Farve going there. So let them run their mouths, their not going anywhere,Ever!!..........Oh the Jealousy and Envy!!!
Elroy from Elroy on January 26th, 2021 at 06:53pmVikings fans are in awe of the packers the same way Brewer fans are in awe of the Twins. The Twins and packers have won it twice in my lifetime. Two times, and that's it. I've never once lauded that over Brewer fans, but maybe I should. Packer fans are hilarious. Get over your average selves! What am I missing? Someone explain it. Maybe Elroy can!
Gregon January 26th, 2021 at 07:43pm2 years under LaFleur, 2 NFC championship game chances. LaFleur has proven he can get us there with Rodgers. Rodgers is upset too, but he'll look at it, question why he didn't run that last 3rd down and move on. No one likes losing. It was a hard fought good game. I think we can regroup and give it another chance or two. I tend to agree with Larry more and more, but I'm not bothered by the go for 2 call or the field goal after Rodgers didn't run. I will continue to strive to be thankful what I've received and try to return the trolling and negativity with some form of grace (knowing deep down that it is the most annoying).
Lynn Dickey Fanon January 26th, 2021 at 10:41amAaron Rodgers is the GOAT of losing NFC Championship games.
Delta 8on January 26th, 2021 at 12:33pmI’ll explain it Greg, what you’re missing is a brain,I didn’t know the twins played football, two different things ya moron!!
Wendy from waseca on January 27th, 2021 at 05:43amHa good one WendyfromWaseca, actually we’re in awe of the Lynx championships,😂 they can play better football than the Queens, typical moron Greg always talking about something that has nothing to do with football!!
Elroy from Elroy on January 27th, 2021 at 05:58amWell, if I'm going to be in awe or jealous, I think I'll go with Tom Brady and the Bucs. It will be Mahomes and the Chiefs shortly. It's supposed to be the Packers for some odd reason. Let me think some more on it. I think I cut a nerve with Wendy and Elroy.
Gregon January 27th, 2021 at 06:16amYeah the packers have lost some NFC championships as of late but so have the Vikings, one thing I do know is the packers aren’t 0 for 4 in the big game, don’t bring the twins into the conversation, that’s childish!! You can look up to Tom Brady,he’s a cheater Greg!!
Gardyon January 27th, 2021 at 06:25amBe sure to tune in on Saturday morning at 8:00 am. It's called KFAN. Davey will try to cover for the packers. It's going to be beautiful. He will mention he didn't like a pass interference call, also. It's going to be delicious, unless he wants to spend more time on the 3 - 13 timberwolves, or whatever the hell it is. Be sure to listen. He won't have the usual energy.
Haroldon January 29th, 2021 at 05:58amAll Right, Last comment till draft. I heard THC say we should have went for it on Kfan. I read there was a 38% chance of making it. and then you need to convert 2 point conversion. that is 48% chance. EVEN if we tie it, brady had 2 minutes and 3 timeouts left to go down and get winning FG.. FOR all of you who say go for it. we still needed to stop brady either way. so we tie it up, YOU all act like then we go to ot. BUT you all say you cant give the ball back to brady he will run the clock out . you have to go for it on 4th down. Either WAY WE NEEDED TO STOP HIM. Sometimes people don't think it thru. They are wrong as far as I am concerned. Lafleur made the right choice. 12 would have got he ball back with 1.36 on clock and 1 timeout. then I will take my chances to win the game with td, CASE closed. think about it . Rodgers should have ran it in on 3rd down, or never went for 2. then we wouldn't have this argument. see ya in the spring.
larryon January 30th, 2021 at 12:09pmIf you listened to Davey on Kfan Saturday, as predicted, he did not like the pass interference call. Bear, Vikings, and Lion fans are on the ground flopping with laughter at that. It was one week ago today, that the packers blew it yet again. Should be a fun off season. I see the scapegoat was the defensive coordinator. LOL
