Packers XLV

Packers Party Like it's 2018.

OK, what the hell was that?

I was one of the fortunate few who didn't watch the first half, as I was driving home from my daughter's softball tournament in St. Joseph. I had the pleasure of listening to Wayne and Larry try to describe an offense that was stuck in neutral and a defense that had no answer for Alvin Kamara and Jameis Winston.

They opened the second half with a little pep in their step, marching down the field and then Aaron Rodgers throws a pick in the red zone, something that happens as often as he's asked to guest host on Jeopardy. He looked nothing like the guy we've watched the past two seasons. Do we blame the summer of his discontent, the notion that he and the offense came in cocky and arrogant, or their lack of reps in the preseason? Or maybe all three?

Then there's the defense. A unit that is virtually the same as last year and one that looked like it had no idea what new coordinator Joe Barry wanted them to do. No sacks, virtually no pressure on Winston, no turnovers and no ability to prevent them from converting on third or fourth downs. Winston and his band of no-name receivers didn't put giant fantasy numbers on the board, but they did enough to confuse the Pack and make big plays whenever they needed to.

As confused and error-prone as the defense was, it takes a back seat to the play of the offense, which in no way resembled the group that led the league in scoring last year. Yes, there are a lot new faces in new places on the offensive line, but overall I think the youngsters up front did an okay job. Matt LaFleur abandoned the running game early and didn't show any of the pre-snap motion and jet sweep stuff that makes this scheme so tough to defend. Randall Cobb didn't get one target from Rodgers in this game. How does that make any sense? The next third down that Rodgers converts will be his first of the season.

He looked like the 2018 version of himself, holding onto the ball too long and missing on open guys because he was a beat too late. His red zone interception was jaw dropping because this is something he just does not do. That was the play that really sealed the Pack's fate; it looked like they were about to cut the Saints lead to 17-10, and instead New Orleans took over and went down and scored again.

Trailing 24-3, the game was all but over, but the Pack's fate was sealed on the egregious roughing the passer call on Za'Darius Smith. It negated a sweet Darnell Savage interception in the end zone that might have provided Green Bay with a faint pulse. Instead, Winston got a fresh set of downs and scored a play or two later and Jordan Love began warming up. Those kinds of calls are the ones that infuriate players, coaches and fans more than any other, because they erase terrific effort by defensive players, who are already up against it, playing a game that is designed and officiated to cater to the offense.

The players and coaches said all the usual things after the game. LaFleur said everyone needs to look in the mirror, including himself. Rodgers said maybe they thought they could just go out there and run up and down the field on the Saints.

None of it makes any sense. This team has been knocking on the door of the Super Bowl the last two years, and this roster was brought back to finish the job. We all know it's likely the last season that this group will be together. The organization has stretched the salary cap to a point where there will be a major reckoning next season. A lot of familiar names will be gone, likely including Rodgers, maybe Davante Adams, Mason Crosby, Preston Smith, Kevin King, the list goes on.

It's true that you can't overreact to the first game. Last year's champs, the Bucs, lost to the Saints on opening weekend and then got drilled by the same score 38-3 later in the season. But this performance was so wretched, so eye-opening, so unexpected that it makes you wonder how they can flip a switch and perform anything like the team we saw last year.

They took the field in Jacksonville looking like they were anything but ready for prime time. Well, the next two games are in prime time and they'll get a chance to show the world whether that performance was an aberration or the early signs of a team whose MVP and leader has mentally checked out and is just playing out the string in 2021.

This is what you get with no pre season live game snaps. Apparantly LaFluer wasnt told there was a game 17 added and thought this was pre season game number 4. GO PACK GO !!

My packers got screwed yesterday. A few calls gone our way and we'd have destroyed the Saints. Everyone is out to get the most wonderful team every assembled. Aaron didn't want to start too hot because wit 17 games this year he was concerned that he'd destroy every NFL record. I agree with the idea of starting slow. 16 - 1 will still be our record.

Yeah looked terrible both sides of the ball,Randall Cobb didn’t do anything,Rodgers had to have him,Only one game,I’ll assume things will get better!!

I recall THC saying that neither King or Jones would be back heading into last offseason. Must have just been wishful thinking after watching them play yesterday. You bring back those two clowns and let Linsley walk? Good call. Also, AR is absolutely sabotaging the team on purpose out there. That's obvious. All 3 levels of your defense are equally bad too.

Same can be said about your bottom feeding team Cane!!

on September 13th, 2021 at 10:40am

Elroy--we lost on a blown fumble call in OT on the road. You got blown out in what was essentially a home game for you guys (fans were 66% Packer fans according to THC). So pound sand.

Typical Vikings fan Cane, you lost to a bottom feeder,it was ruled a fumble, don’t take into consideration the 15 penalties and horseshit secondary and quarterback play, typical whining Mudduck!!

9/10/21, 31-24 Pack over the Saints, great call Dave? Elroy from Elroy blows goats! THC Blog is about the Packers, stick to the Pack. I hate when Packer fans cannot deal with a bad performance and look to dump on other teams. We looked terrible in every single aspect of the game. Murphy, Gutekunst, Barry, Hackett, LaFleur... All need to walk the plank! I know they will all just point to the guy next to them instead of pointing inward and fixing the problems they are responsible for.

on September 13th, 2021 at 11:37am

Ha Cane Elroy is right, that fumble call is why you lost, really, all the penalties and horseshit offensive line and Cousins had nothing to do with it, I said the Packers played horrible and what’s being on the road have to do with anything, you do realize you have to win some road games to make the playoffs dipshit!! Yeah blame it on the fumble call,Cmon!! You pound sand whining Mudduck!!

Davey doesn't get it. Rodgers only had 26 td passes in 2019, and 25 td passes in 2018. He had 48 last year, because it was a glorified scrimmage with no fans. He could change plays at will, and there wasn't a sound in the stadium. Those days are long gone. He will have about 25 this year, and will be just another qb. I wish Davey could accept the obvious.

I was at the game and sitting next to a bunch of packer fans. They were chuggin beer, chewing Skoal, spitting, swearing, farting and had hairy armpits. The men were even worse!

Lombardi must have been screaming from above: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON OUT HERE1 There's plenty to tear apart on this one and most of it probably has been. Best advice for the team and fans is don't let it linger and carry on into the next one. The Packers have rebounded from bad performances before under LaFleur and the coach will have the chance this week to show he can fix issues again. The Saints dominated Tampa Bay twice last year, including a similar 38-3 game in Tampa. They lost at home to the Bucs in the playoffs 30-20. So how much does a game like this prove in Week 1? The Saints served notice they'll be as good as usual without Drew Brees. As for Green Bay, for now let's say THE PACK WILL BE BACK.

OSSG, Couldn't disagree more. In 2011 the Pack played the saints with no pre season with Rodgers, I know with MM, But, they scored over 40 if I remember right and won. Last year there was no pre season, and how did they come out on the road versus the vikes.? No excuses there. They were over confident, playing in neutral stadium and stopped even try to run the ball way to early. 12 and the coach both said that, but they didn't have the ball much either. But I will say the coaching staff, were out coached also. AS dumb as this sounds. I am not worried about the offense. The defense is what we should be worried about. 2 -15 play drives??? hard to get in rhythm. By the end of the year I think were going to wish we had the old d coach back. This zone shit does not work. I have said it for 10 years. they don't know who to guard and then they point at each other who's fault it is. KING has to go. I am sick of watching him get beat. Stokes cannot be worse. I know I picked him in pre-draft that Pack would take him, BUT look back. I said if T.J. Watt is there they better take him. How we he have looked the last 5 years? If they don't beat the Lions 34 to 20 or so, it may be along year. Jamal Williams may have 80 yards rushing and 70 receiving, along with swift also. Lastly. when a lot of you had no problems with Packers taking Love after draft. Please note archives. I said, I didn't mind the move, But should have taken Hurts, I don't think Love can play as well and Hurts has played in a lot more big games.. How did he look Sunday? Threw 3 td's 264 yds. and 62 yds. rushing . Someday THC will give me some LOVE. LOL>. Enjoy the season

I don't ever recall watching a Packer Team so unprepared to play.

on September 15th, 2021 at 06:03am

It's all good in the hood, people. This was just one game, and we have 16 more remaining. Winston was obviously fired up for the week 1 matchup, and returned to a pumpkin week 2. Better to get this clunker out of the way on week 1 as opposed to NFC Championship game. The last team the Saints beat 38-3 went on to win the Super Bowl. R-E-L-A-X. GO PACK GO!
