Could A Heisman Winner Be Lurking at #32?

Posted February 23rd, 2011 @ 04:02pm

When you're the Super Bowl champ and you pick at the bottom of the first round, you take the best player left on your board, regardless of position. As the world champs, you don't have pressing needs anywhere, so you look and see who has fallen in your lap and you grab him to close out the first night of the draft.

Sure, the Pack would love to see a great tackle prospect sitting there, or an outside linebacker to play opposite Matthews and create new problems for opposing offenses. But if you peruse the seemingly millions of early mock drafts out there, a lot of them have Mark Ingram, the talented 'Bama running back, available for the Packers at #32.

Two words: Take him. Now, truth be told, when I do my first mock draft--which will appear here on March 1st, I'll have Ingram going to the Dolphins at #15. But if they go in another direction, there's a chance the guy who reminds folks of Emmitt Smith could slide all the way to the bottom of the round. If he's there, there's no way you pass him up. You thank Ryan Grant for helping save the '07 season and for his solid work these last few years, and you say goodbye. You roll into 2011 with Ingram and Starks and maybe pick up a third down guy later in the draft or in free agency.

Of course, everything can change after the combine. Ingram's dropped some weight and if he shines in Indy, he could elevate himself to the top 10. But the value of running backs has dropped lately. LaGarrette Blount was the leading rookie rusher in 2010 and he was undrafted. Arian Foster, the NFL's rushing leader was also undrafted. But Ingram could be special and would be worth rolling the dice for the Pack.

The more likely scenario is the Packers will choose between a cornerback and an outside linebacker--you get the feeling there will be good talent at those positions available. But thinking about the Packers offense as it stands now and injecting Ingram along with Finley into the mix. Could be lots of fun--and lots of points in 2011.

Heya i am for the first time here. I found this board and I find It truly useful & it helped me out a lot. I hope to give something back and help others like you helped me.

on February 22nd, 2012 at 09:37am

I've said it all along Dave, if Mark Ingram is available in the 6th round, we should definitely consider nabbin him. I like our chances with Kuhn, Hall, Ingram, and B. Jackson.

on February 23rd, 2011 at 02:45pm

March 1st you say.............I will anxiously await the wisdom delivered that is "The Head Cheese" on March 1st. ------Until then I'll simply blather on about all the meaningless things that enter my mind regarding Packers football.....did I mention yet that we need a KR/PR? ----------Also patiently waiting for SoCalSchen to grace us with his two cents worth (which is actually worth at least a nickel). GoPack!

on February 23rd, 2011 at 04:01pm

BTW, was I the only one that was reading along and thought "is he suggesting that we're going to draft Cam Newton?" .... you had me worried there for a minute HeadCheese. GoPack!

on February 23rd, 2011 at 04:51pm

Davy.....Look forward to your Mock Draft. Ingram will not be available at #32.....if he is you take him. There will be a good OT available in "the best player available" category. Take it from me....I am a poor man's Mel Kiper without hair in draft rubeness. I stand by my Packer 5 round draft I wrote on your previous blog which I will put on again in response to your Mock Draft on March 1 in the comments for that future writing. When I sleep at night I dream of that Packer glorius post Super Bowl parade.....how sweet it is !!! Go Pack Go !!

on February 23rd, 2011 at 05:24pm

I agree with OSSG, there will be an OT available there. I think too many coaches aren't quite sold on the OT's this year and thus will be concerned about drafting them "too high". Picking a pretty good one at #32 will be a good spot for Mr. TT. Start the year with Clifton, hope to end the year with Clifton and bring the rookie along as an insurance policy. Go Pack!

on February 23rd, 2011 at 08:10pm

Ingram is about the only running back I would take that high right now. Ted is riding high on being the smart's guy in the league right now. I'd look for him to try to be sneaky a little later in the draft. He's going to go as can't miss as possible with #32.

on February 23rd, 2011 at 10:36pm

I don't claim to be a draftnik, but its cleat that TT will take the best player available. Not sure saying goodbye to Grant and trusting your backfield to two guys with injury histories is the smartest idea. Besides, they paid Grant a lot of money to spend the season on IR and probably want to get something out of him next season

on February 23rd, 2011 at 11:06am

Couldn't agree more. If Ingram is still on the board at 32, even my 40 time would look good turning in that card!

on February 24th, 2011 at 02:30pm

Larry, I am concerned you're going to need a good orthopedic surgeon to fix that rotator cuff if you keep patting yourself on the back like that...............but I agree with you that combining picks and working on quality, not quantity is going to be the key to this draft. I disagree that getting a "great" OLB is more important than getting a "really good/great" OT in the first round. -- I also agree that getting a WR/KR in the 2nd round is a good choice if available. We can't risk Tramon getting injured anymore and need to bring some electricity to our return game. GoPack!

on February 24th, 2011 at 02:42pm

hey packer minds, please let me tell you that as much as I like reading all of your scribes,I may have to tell you again that I was the one that predicted the 21-14 score in championship game and said we would be ahead by 2 scores in the super bowl the whole game and pitt would score late to make it close, I said 31-27. After patting myself on the back, this is why I am the great packer plus guy. What tt should do is give up the 3rd round draft pick and 4th and move up in the late teens and pick the best outside linebacker on the board. I will let u know later after combine. I love the guy from texas A@M. but he may be gone. we will have an extra pick for losing Kampmann in 3rd or 4th round. we don't need all these picks. We are going to have to figure out away to keep these players on Ir. plus holly will be back. I would then draft a w.r in 2nd round who can return and be a future starter when driver is done next year. give up the 5th and 6th and 7th picks and get a another tackle in the 4th round. the last pick get another cb, we always need them. I would be so happy, we need quality now, not bodies. we are already the 2nd youngest team and world champions. There you have it. Makes a lot of sense boys doesn't it? Davey, your thoughts. catch ya later. GO PACK!!!!!

Thanks for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbor were just preparing to do some research about this. We got a grab a book from our area library but I think I learned more from this post. I am very glad to see such excellent info being shared freely out there.

I concur, for the most part, but don't you feel as if the issue is more complex than that?

on March 22nd, 2012 at 08:35pm

You have a great point but I wonder, what do you think about flipside?

Will there be any kind of upgrade from the iphone4 to iPhone 5 as soon as it comes out? I'm verifying if an iPhone 4 user should be able to update to the iPhone 5 when it comes out. I have had my iphone4 since september of last year and i don't want to pay $600 for the iPhone 5 when it comes out this summer time.
