The Head Cheese Emerges From His Shell
Posted February 10th, 2012 @ 06:02pm
OK, now that the Super Bowl is over, I can come out of my cave. Sorry that things have gotten a little stale around here--it took a while to get over that performance against the Giants.
Now that a little time has passed, I feel ready to look ahead to the season opener, most likely Thursday, September 6th, when the two most recent champs square off at Met Life Stadium. I'd be very surprised if Pack at Giants does not kickoff the 2012 season, giving the Packers a chance to get that sour taste out of their mouths and get the new season off on the right foot.
You can come up with all the reasons you want for the flat performance we witnessed at Lambeau Field. I suppose there's a reason so few teams repeat these days and why five of the past six #1 seeds in the NFC have gone down in the divisional round. Everything changes when you're on top and you're susceptible to all kinds of outside influences affecting the team on any given day.
That said, there will once again be a lot of new faces on the 2012 Packers. Ted Thompson's first decisions come with his free agents. Let's take a look at who's involved:
Unrestricted Free Agents
Bring Him Back Category: Center Scott Wells earned a new deal and although at 31 he's a couple of years older than Thompson is probably comfortable with, he can't cut Wells loose. He earned his Pro Bowl bid and provides a high level of comfort for his MVP quarterback. Every offensive line needs a dependable veteran and with Chad Clifton likely done, Wells fills the bill.
Yep, that's it. He's the only one that makes the list.
Gone But Not Forgotten Category:Â It was a nice run for Ryan Grant and he provided a nice late season boost when James Starks' ankle was acting up. But despite the 80 yard TD in week 17 against the Lions, Grant is not the answer for this offense. Unless he's willing to take backup money, the Packers will move on and either hope Alex Green can come back healthy, or find another back in the draft or via free agency. Erik Walden saw his game fall off the map after his domestic issues and it appears his time is done. Howard Green was another solid find who was a solid contributor to the '10 champs, but he's getting up there in age and a cheaper replacement can be found. Pat Lee and Jarrett Bush are both likely to be gone, though Bush has more lives than a cat and may find a way back. The Pack will hope that Davon House can step in as a sophomore and they'll address the secondary again in the draft.
That leaves Matt Flynn, who we know will be one of the most sought-after free agents next month, likely landing in Miami, Seattle or Cleveland. It will be interesting to see whether Graham Harrell is handed the backup job or whether the team brings in a veteran to serve as insurance, should Rodgers go down next season. I'd like to see them choose the latter route.
Tag Him. Jermichael Finley likely will get the franchise tag, which for tight ends is around $5 million. I think we'd all like to see a stronger 2012 campaign from #88 before he's handed the keys to the Brinks truck. In the year of the tight end, Finley did not become one of the elite guys. Jimmy Graham, Vernon Davis and Rob Gronkowski all surpassed him. He needs to put up bigger numbers consistently to get paid like a top 5 tight end. It could get ugly if Finley's representatives insist he be tagged at WR money, since he lines up outside more than he does inside. We'll see if that storyline plays out.
Very interesting info!Perfect just what I was looking for!

fgashdnpon August 6th, 2012 at 11:16amGreat day for a blog about what may be in store for the Pack next season, Dave. Packer ticket invoice arrived in the mail today and our tickets are up $5/game this year. Nonetheless looking forward to another fun season.
Keekon February 10th, 2012 at 02:56pmAs the saying goes: "Offense sells tickets but defense wins championships" depicts the 2011 Packer season. Super Bowls I, II, XXXI, and XLV are no more compelling proof. Cullen Jenkins was missed. TT will not make this same mistake. We all knew that our defense this year was a disaster just waiting to happen and imploded at the most inopportune time. Our defensive secondary is a mess and our pass rush was a shadow of what it was 12 months earlier. The motto for the 2012 season should be: "Unfinished Business".
Badger Bob from Vadnais Heightson February 12th, 2012 at 09:45amgood to have u back davey, but as i did at he end of the year telling u how i was worried about the giants and u were worried about playing the lions again. u are so wrong on bush. i will bet our houses on that. they love him on special teams and he can play the slot and some safety. he will be on the team no doubt. as is said before if 88 makes a big stink about being paid as wr. get rid of him. he had so many drops he should just take a 3 year contract for 12 mil. or tell him see ya. i still wished tt would have listened to me last year and traded up and got rid of all those picks and got jj watt. how would he look now? we don't always need to be the youngest team every year. it's time for 3-4 years to go for it with 12 and 85 and 52 here. Wells needs to be signed, i said last year he is the most underrated guy on the team, never has a bad snap and 12 is always in shotgun. were a little spoiled over here compared to loserville next door, but we need to go for it now, badger bob, good call, unfinished business. go pack
larryon February 12th, 2012 at 11:48amLarry, I love your enthusiasm, however, stating that "I wish TT would have listened to me last year" is a little over the top. Happy for you that you make some nice calls. You are going to win the "Most likely to break own shoulder patting self on back" award. Can you please post your thoughts without all the self-congratulatory tone? It's seriously driving me crazy. GoPack!
SchenySchenon February 13th, 2012 at 04:59pmNice to have you back Davy. Agree 100% with all your choices. Am kind of a draftnik so have done some research already. Obviously need to concentrate on defense and would like to see TT change his philosophy a bit and dip into the free agent market more for defensive help. TT likes youth....but this is a team for "NOW" and with our potential we should be able to attract some decent help. On the offensive side I agree a running back is important...look what a Darrin Sprohles type did for Dree Brees. Giveing Rodgers an option like that would be huge. Look forward to draft talk !! GO PACK GO !!
OLD SOUTH SIDE GUYon February 13th, 2012 at 09:49amLarry, I get it. It is fun to see your thoughts and suggestions come true. Like I said, I love your enthusiasm. GoPack! Looking forward to the draft specualation.
SchenySchenon February 14th, 2012 at 03:19pmscheny schen, i hear ya, but if u have read most of my comments i do cut myself down for patting myself on my back to much. i just hate when i see things and there right and i wish i could be doing what i would love to do. i will calm it down this year though. i can't wait for u and ossg to have your draft thoughts. i play a lot of fantasy fb. and i think it starts there on my predicting and hoping of what the pack would do. go pack
larryon February 14th, 2012 at 12:31pmI agree that Wells must be resigned and that he has earned it. If my memory is correct, we have recently tried to "improve" at center with Spitz and then Nick McDonald. How'd that work out? With new faces at the tackle positions (Bulaga, Sherod, Newhouse), Dave is right-it is worth it to have a veteran in that spot. Look what happened to the Vikings after they let Birk leave? Also agree with Larry that Bush will be back for sure, assuming he re-signs for acceptable pay. Certianly not worth overpaying. Just keep him on special teams and out of pass coverage. As for Pat Lee, did I miss the good game he had during his career with the Packers? He is terrible in pass coverage and unlike Bush, he seems also to be terrible at special teams (remember the saftey on the kick where he knelt down?). What a waste of a 2nd round pick but I got to believe we can do better and must do better with Woodson getting older. We need an up-and-coming corner or two to take over the nickel spot if Woodson moves to safety or if Shields or Williams can't return to 2010 form. Pat Lee sure as heck ain't the guy and neither is Bush. But the free agent decisions look pretty clear, I think:bring back Wells & Finley and the rest? Whatever Ted decides is fine by me. The real decisions I am struggling with are what to do with our aging players still under contract in 2012? I think Hawk(too much money for mediocre performance again) and Clifton (body just can't hold up anymore but thanks for a lot of great years) will be gone. I pray Collins can come back. But that leaves us 2 very hard questions: Driver and Woodson. Driver is at $5miilion but even more important, is he taking snaps from the young up-and-comers? And then there is Woodson. Can we justify paying him 11.5 million in 2012? I think we need to redo that contract. Regardless, let's make sure we treat these 2 with class as they have shown us over their Packer careers so far.
The Trashmanon February 15th, 2012 at 08:41amYep, it's 100% predictable. Larry just can't help himself. Even when he is cutting himself down he wants you to read his old post. Yeah, I'm tired of it too. Larry, you have good takes, but before you hit "post comment" delete the part where you say "if you read my old post". It would help a lot.
lynndickeyfanon February 15th, 2012 at 08:55pmOK....from the old draftnik and some of my research here are some names that could be available when the Packs turn comes: If Scott Wells is lost to free agency....Peter Konz...center from Wisconsin....Trumaine Johnson a top cornerback from Montana....Chase Minnefield a cornerback from Virginia....Fletcher Cox a defensive end fom Mississippi State....Nick Perry a DE and LB from USC.....my personal favorite if available....he is a speed outside rusher....6-3 250 lbs would be a perfect compliment opposite Claymaker and a better short pass defender than any of our existing LB's. ...Finally an intriguing option....Lamar Miller ...a RB from Miami....the fastest back in the draft....said to be a 4.3 speed guy with good pass catching ability....would be a nice option for Rodgers out of the backfield. Anyway.....all early interesting thoughts. GO PACK GO !!
OLD SOUTH SIDE GUYon February 16th, 2012 at 04:19pmFrom my last draft post here is some interesting scouting reports on a guy that could be available to us in round 1. I know we need defense but this Lamar Miller added to the offense is tantalizing: Miller is leaving school as a redshirt sophomore and only has two years of strong play. The 2011 season was his first as the starting running back and he produced some big numbers. In three games against some high quality defenses he performed as a superstar amongst stars. He rushed for 184 yards against Ohio State, 166 yards against Virginia Tech, and 92 yards against Florida State. He has the playing strength, agility, vision, and competiveness to be a very good starting running back in the NFL. He is a big play waiting to happen every time he touches the ball because of his speed and superior burst. He needs to use better technique in pass protection. He was not used a lot as a receiver in the Miami offense, but has the hands to catch and secure the ball well. He would be dynamic in a one back system or spread offense if a team would use his speed and burst to get him on the perimeter. Miller can also run with pad level low and get tough yards inside. He will remind some of past Hurricanes great Clinton Portis with his style of play. .
OLD SOUTH SIDE GUYon February 16th, 2012 at 04:28pmIt is in point of fact a great and helpful piece of info. I am happy that you just shared this helpful information with us. Please stay us up to date like this. Thanks for sharing.
bi?uteria srebrnaon February 16th, 2012 at 10:29pmDave, I agree with about 90% of your post. Yes, keeping Wells should be a priority, as well as tagging Finley, starting over at running back and paying attention to the D in the draft. At the backup QB, unless he comes really cheap, a veteran isn't the way to go, IMHO. Harrell has been around a few years, and it's time to find out why he's been here that long. Somebody knows something about him (that being TT and MM), otherwise he'd have been gone a long time ago. It would be great if Flynn stayed on, but there's at best a 5% chance of that happening. Besides, wasn't he a 7th rounder? Further evidence that TT knows what he's doing. He'll find the right guy to be #3 in the draft, no doubt.

Berniceon February 18th, 2012 at 09:57amSo here are a couple of SchenySchen approved draft choices for TT: Rnd 1 - Vinny Curry OLB(he looked great at Senior bowl and will rise at Combine). Rnd 2 Brandon Boykin CB Georgia (tough kid, fast and not afraid to tackle). Rnd 3 Michael Martin DT Michigan (also looked great at Senior bowl, this may be too late for him). Rnd 3 Compensatory pick Donald Reyes DT UConn or Tony Dye SS Notre Dame. GoPack!
SchenySchenon February 20th, 2012 at 12:18pmI should also mention I am not above trading James Jones for a 2nd round pick if we could get it. If we can sign and trade Flynn for a 3rd rounder this year, rather than getting compensatory next year, I would be all for it. GoPack!

This ndy?Satchel within eucalyptus buckskin will be kind of boring to look at, however because of which zippered gusset which displays a darker-hued cell since it can make this particular bag just a little interesting. It additionally includes a double top handles along with fantastic sq . hyperlink attachments, a premier squat closure, and several highlights on the side.

viagraon May 15th, 2012 at 05:28pmI don't think these comments are a big deal. Finley isn't the smrtseat guy in the world. So, anytime he lets loose, he's bound to say something regrettable. I'm sure he still wants the ball even when he is double teamed. That's fine by me. He is just too stupid to realize how poor the timing is, and he is also too stupid to recognize when a reporter is trying to hook him. Pay the man? Hardly. The quickest thing people forget is that it takes two to make a contract. I don't think Finley will be interested in what we have to offer him. We have 3 of our WRs extended. Can we afford to pay a max contract for a TE? I doubt it.
Susion May 18th, 2012 at 02:59pmAw, this was a really nice post. In idea I would like to put in writing like this additionally – taking time and actual effort to make a very good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and by no means seem to get something done.
viagraon May 18th, 2012 at 04:53amYahoo! One issue for next year eliminated. More to come. I hope.I agree Thomas, Finley has had duibtrliay issues and needs to play a full schedule before any more guarenteed money is on the table.
Kimon May 18th, 2012 at 05:24amPosted on I’d must test with you here, which isn't something I usaluly do! I get pleasure from reading a post that will make folks think. Thanks for permitting me to remark!
Dodyon May 18th, 2012 at 05:35amWe rout a team at home where the ball gets spread aruond and this guy is bitching about individual statistics. It's not always about the message, but rather how it is delivered. Referring to yourself as the playmaker when you are on a team full of weapons is a joke and is even worse than using the third person. The problem is that this isn't the first time he has made brash, anti-team comments and, more importantly, it doesn't feel like it will be the last. The organization doesn't put up with this kind of bullshit, nor should they.
Racheleon May 18th, 2012 at 05:57pmDude needs to grow up. Give him a chance. Let Drive, and Jennings to bring him back down to earth. I agree tguhoh, that if he doesn't drop this crap towards the end of the year we shouldn't resign him. Its destructive to Green Bay's football culture. Packers take the high road and do what they can to lift each other up.
Nurdinon May 18th, 2012 at 09:23pmI don't know why these coaches think they have no right or relstnpibisioy to control their players. Make Finley sit through 6 hours of how to be a team player training'. it should be part of a coaches relstnpibisioy's to maintain team order. if you have undisciplined, discipline them. if they choose the low road, at least it didn't go unpunished.
Wooon May 20th, 2012 at 03:01amYou give a mouse a piece of cheese(3tds) and he wants a glass of milk.IMO,TT will see,if he hasn't adarely, this egomaniac is and will be insatiable.I hope Rodgers doesn't look his way once this week and win again just to see his assinine, unteam oriented rants.Finley is the Winner of the biggest Loser!
Emeon May 20th, 2012 at 03:50amwhat, you don't want one of our best weapons to hate not being prctoudive?I'd rather put up with his whining than not having him hog up double teams that happens to allow our Awesome Core of WRs to get shots in 1 on 1 situations (which our dudes win 5 out of 5).
Deeption May 20th, 2012 at 04:30amWhat I would like to see, just once, is a top rated QB that Aaron is, say this. I am truly happy with the money I am getting, theoferre, I don't really need anymore above what I am getting now, so management can spend the extra money they are saving on me to keep the best offensive line in front of me and the best receivers around me. Moreover, this will give them the extra money to keep the best defense in league too. It takes a lot of money to keep a team together and anyone/everyone here knows, if the Packers front office can keep great players around Aaron, the sky is the limit to what this team could do winning championships and that is what its all about.
Kheon May 20th, 2012 at 04:30amThere's 3 1/2 years left on his current deal. Unless AR srttas grumbling the earliest I would address his contract is after the 2012 season. There still would be 2 years left on his contract. When he signed the deal both sides were happy. What if TT gave AR an extension and then had trouble signing CM3, Tramon, Jennings, etc. This is still a business and TT has to manage a salary cap.
Altafon May 20th, 2012 at 05:15amClass act, as always. Why would he be worierd about the money right now? He's doing ok for a 27 year old single guy.Loved hearing he wants to retire as a Packer; he may be a Cali kid who bitches about the cold & likes his dome shoes, but Green Bay, Wisconsin is his home.YES!!!GO PACK GO!!
Rayon May 20th, 2012 at 07:03amIt is indeed my belief that mesothelioma is usually the most dangerous cancer. It contains unusual attributes. The more I actually look at it the harder I am sure it does not act like a true solid cells cancer. When mesothelioma is a rogue virus-like infection, therefore there is the potential for developing a vaccine plus offering vaccination to asbestos uncovered people who are at high risk regarding developing future asbestos linked malignancies. Thanks for discussing your ideas on this important ailment.
