Random Thoughts Heading Into Bills Week

Random thoughts every Thursday at theheadcheese.com:

The last time Buffalo won a game at Lambeau Field, OJ Simpson was their star. Much has happened in the intervening 36 years to all parties--but a win by the Bills in Green Bay is not one of them...'The dawning of the Brandon Jackson era' just doesn't sound right...Two things we rarely worried about with Ryan Grant: fumbling and pass protection. He excelled at both--let's hope Jackson has learned a thing or two.

Pack has won three straight home openers under McCarthy, following a couple of years where the Pack lost some head-scratchers...Last week we got the top Fox team; this week we get the bottom of the CBS barrel: something called Spero Dedes and Randy Cross...This is one of two appearances on CBS this season: the home game against the Dolphins next month is the other.

It appears the Justin Harrell experiment is over. Time to cut our losses and move on. It was a very questionable draft pick when it was made and it is now officially a bust. Quite a draft that was: Darrelle Revis went two picks before Harrell, with Patrick Willis a few picks before that. A guy sandwiched in between those picks: running back Marshawn Lynch.

While Lynch has fallen down the depth chart in Buffalo, it appears they don't want to move him. You'd think with the oft-injured linebacker Paul Posluszny hurt once again, they might look at A.J. Hawk in a possible Lynch deal. Hawk will get plenty of snaps this weekend against a team that likes to run. Maybe it will be an audition for his future employer.

I'm still thinking about how impressive the Pack's special teams play was in the opener. Every unit exceeded my expectations--let's see if that can continue. I'm still worried about Tramon Williams on punts. He's too valuable to the defense to risk injury...Looking forward to watching rookie C.J. Spiller on Sunday. Once the Bills get their line together, this guy will be on a short list of the most exciting players to watch in the league. Oh what the Pack's offense could do do with a weapon like him.

After a sluggish start and finish against the Eagles, I expect the Pack's offense to be back in preseason form (that's a good thing) against the Bills. With the Bears and Lions to follow, Aaron Rodgers and that passing game should put up huge numbers over the next few weeks...The Pack is likely to be favored to win every game in the first half of the season until week 8 in N.Y. on Halloween against the Jets. Then again, if Sanchez continues to play like he did Monday night, the Pack may very well be favored in that one too.

Bills coach Chan Gailey will be keeping an eye on Packer rookie safety Morgan Burnett during the game. Gailey coached Burnett at Georgia Tech when the kid was a freshman...Former highly drafted Packers Brian Brohm and Jamon Meredith are on the Bills roster...Former tight end David Martin is a Bill now.

Finally, just can't wait to see what fireworks the Pack has in store for a typical capacity crowd at Lambeau. If you're in the Twin Cities on Sunday, join me at the Park Tavern in St. Louis Park. We'll make it feel like Lambeau West.
