Midweek Musings on Border Battle III

Posted January 2nd, 2013 @ 03:01pm

New Year's festivities are over (Happy New Year, everyone), most of us are back at work and we're starting to get serious about Saturday night's game at Lambeau.

First order of business is to consider who has a chance to miss the game and who might be back. For the Vikings, they're monitoring Antoine Winfield's broken hand, which prevented him from finishing the game last week. Marcus Sherels was completely torched by Rodgers and Jennings and whether #26 plays or not, the Vikes will be looking for a different option to man the slot. The other two nicked defensive players, Brian Robison and rookie Harrison Smith both seem likely to play.

For the Pack, Charles Woodson has been cleared to return, after missing nine weeks with the broken collarbone. I have no delusions that he will step onto the field after that much time off and become the Woodson of 2010. But his presence in the huddle and on the sidelines will be huge for a defensive unit that played horribly last weekend. You have to believe the guys in the back seven have been forced to watch the film over and over: the missed tackles, the poor coverage, the dumb penalties. I expect a much stronger defensive performance this time around and Woodson's presence will only help.

I think the Pack should have everyone healthy on defense, except for Jerel Worthy--sounds like he may torn his ACL which will put his 2013 in doubt (continuing a disturbing trend of significant injuries to top draft picks: Sherrod, Perry, Bulaga).

Offensively, it sounds like Randall Cobb will be back. It will be interesting to see if the Pack puts him back on returns, or if they let Jeremy Ross play again after a strong showing at the Metrodome. With Cobb coming off an injury and the wintry conditions, it's a tough call. It would be a lot of pressure for Ross--to play in those elements on that kind of stage.

Jordy Nelson missed Tuesday's practice and his status is up in the air until we hear from McCarthy. It seems like a season that's destined to never give Rodgers all of his weapons--one comes back and another goes down. With Boykin's injury, Driver might get one last chance to make some magic at Lambeau.

DuJuan Harris provided a nice boost to the running game after Ryan Grant got off to a slow start. I don't understand a lot of Packer fans' infatuation with Grant. I know he had a nice day against the Titans, but there's a reason he was out on the streets all season. Expect Harris, Alex Green and maybe even James Starks to see carries this week, though I get the feeling Starks will be inactive for another week.

After what happened last year in the playoffs, Rodgers and company have been pointing toward this time. A chance at redemption and a chance for Rodgers to deliver a message to the rest of the playoff field. The Vikings have to rebound quickly off a very emotional win at home. A game where Peterson ran for 200 yards, Ponder had a QB rating of 120 and the Vikings didn't turn the ball over--and they won on a last second field goal.

This time the Packers have the same motivation as the Vikings--and they remain very difficult to beat at Lambeau (the 2-4 home playoff record this decade notwithstanding).

The wise guys in Vegas are believers. The Packers and 49ers are the favorites to reach the Super Bowl from the NFC at 6:1. It starts with the Vikings. I like Dom Capers' ability to make adjustments to make things more difficult for Ponder, who has not played in elements like these (nor has their superb kicker Blair Walsh). The Vikings' four straight wins have all come indoors. The high temperature on Saturday is 26, with winds at 15 mph. That changes everything.

A Packer fan telling anyone to "stop living in the past?" Fox, after your beloved Pack lost last year and you were chided, did you ask "How many SB's have you won?"

on January 2nd, 2013 at 03:47pm

Who brought up the past here?? Idiot Cane that's who! He's still thinking its last year!! What a bozo! Vikes cant put 4 healthy guys back there THIS YEAR! Torch city baby!! The only past i mentioned was your glorious 41 donut! Keep living in that past along with taking a knee and 12 in the huddle!!! Those are playoff memories!!!

on January 2nd, 2013 at 04:25pm

I nearly shat myself to see a Packer fan telling someone to stop living in the past. Siny, a high temp of 26 with winds at 15mph help the team that can control the clock by running the ball and being stout against the run. Maybe Peterson can break at least one of Dickerson's records and set the single game playoff rushing record this Saturday, I could even seeing him breaking 40 attempts to grab that record as well. Get ready to watch a lot of broken tackles Siny...and a lot of broken hearts in Lambeau.

on January 2nd, 2013 at 05:01pm

Well you just go right ahead and shat youself and while you're at it just keep riding that one trick pony until it falls over. Keep chowing down that shat PA dishes out cuz youre just as delusional as he is, maybe worse.

Things getting a little out of hand in the comments section, no? I am a Packer fan. I think the Packers are a better team than the Vikings and should win this Saturday. However, if the Viks beat us 2 weeks in a row, then the GB players, coaches, and FANS have absolutely no excuses. Here's hoping THAT doesn't happen!

on January 2nd, 2013 at 05:38pm

Trashman, you're absolutely right. I have to admit that a part of me found this exchange to be somewhat entertaining, although just slightly juvenile. Plain and simple, the Vikings do not win two in a row, period. If purple lightning strikes, I'll be the first to admit they've earned the right to get destroyed by the Falcons, so THT and all his loyal followers can go on and on about how great they are and how wretched the Pack is. That's all well and good, but there won't be a Lombardi trophy in the vicinity of Viking Drive in Eden Prairie any time soon. Count on it.

"I like Dom Capers' ability to make adjustments ". THC--did you really just say that? Did you like the adjustments Capers made to reduce Peterson's yardage from 212 the first game to 199 the 2nd game? Sounds like you may have taken one too many footballs to the face of late......

on January 2nd, 2013 at 10:04am

Cane you're an idiot. Just because you one trick pony purple teletubbies would only wish you had capers calling your d shots. Prepare to have that trash secondary of yours lit up like a roman candle. Pack 41, queens 0. Get the message?

on January 2nd, 2013 at 11:17am

You call our secondary trash when YOURS gave up an NFL record for passing yards last season? And I'm the idiot? Tomlin, Frazier, Williams > Capers.

on January 2nd, 2013 at 11:50am

Yes you are the idiot and you just proved it. Last year is last year and this year is THIS YEAR FOOL!!! Quit living in the past and get a new calender!!! And get a life while youre at it!!

on January 2nd, 2013 at 12:23pm

Will be interesting to see if these Packer haters come back on here when theirPurple get spanked. Like most bandwagon jumpers they can go and hide out in the Viking trophy room after the game. There will be a lot of room for them in that room because there sure are no trophies to be seen. GO PACK GO !!

on January 3rd, 2013 at 01:16pm

Barreiro is a homer for us--despite the fact he is a damn Bears fan! Larry you a fkn monogoloid!

on January 3rd, 2013 at 02:30pm

Win again baby - with a handle like that you probably are one. I'll bet you've never been to a game at Lambeau. Ask anyone anywhere and they'll tell you it's the best stadium experience anywhere, even for visiting fans. For that matter I bet you've never been to the Humpty. Probably just sat on your baby _ss at home in you mom's basement apartment. Purple guy is the shining example of delusional. Look in the mirror bozo! And Cane is still an idiot. That's already been established. You queenie fans are all nuts. Maybe not all of them, just the ones stupid enough to visit this blog.

on January 3rd, 2013 at 03:35pm

I am glad not to be going to the worlds largest gathering of drunk morons on Sunday. I bet if Packer fans did not drink before the game Lamebeau would be shaking so bad from all the fans going through alcohol withdrawal.

on January 3rd, 2013 at 04:14am

Fox--I visit this blog out of the respect that I have for THC, you piece of trash.

on January 3rd, 2013 at 04:16pm

Hmmm. The last few open posts you've made you've called to light how Dave got a ball thrown in his face and you seemed to revel in it, even thinking it was funny. Is that your idea of respect? And now that someone is here handing it back to you, you're having a hard time dealing with it? Just stick to the facts, keep it on a professional level and maybe, just maybe, you'll get respect from me. You might be surprised.

on January 3rd, 2013 at 04:27pm

Delusional. Really mrpurpleguy. There is a picture of a queens helmet next to the definition of delusional in Websters. There is no one on this planet more delusional that queens fans. Period. Or maybe you've never listened to that delusional play-by-play announcer for the queens. In the world of a queens fan, at the start of every season, the lavender are going to the Superbowl again that year. And no players in the NFL are better that any queens player at any position. Your squad is a complete and utter joke. The only thing they've ever done is set the benchmark for choking and arrests. There is no way the pathetic queenies go to Lambeau and come away with a victory. Enjoy the last game in the queens 52nd season of abject futility.

on January 3rd, 2013 at 04:37pm

win again baby! What do you know about winning? The lavender have never never won ANYTHING in over half a century. And they never will!

on January 3rd, 2013 at 04:45pm

OSSG, at last!!! It's gotten a little thick in here the last few days, so it's nice to have your fresh take (as usual) show up here. It's interesting how these purple bandwagon types show up at times like this, but you're absolutely right. They'll run off and hide probably around 10:30 or so Saturday night. And the trophy room at Winter Park WILL fit them for sure! Let's hope things settle down around here sooner rather than later. The Pack has the tools - put them to good use. GO PACK!!

on January 3rd, 2013 at 06:26pm

I just absolutely love it how delusional all you packers fans are. You know you are going to lose and you can't escape your fate. So you make up little excuses like how cold it is going to be outside, when on the surface this completely negates the fact that THIS IS FOOTBALL. Everyone is going to be cold, and good players are still good players. We are gonna whoop that ass in Lambeau and ride our 4-0 momentum straight to Atlanta. SKOLLLLL

No one doubts the talent AP brings to the table and his line has played well for him, but we've just moved up a level. I fully believe AP can bring it at a playoff level. I doubt, however, that Ponder can. I expect the Pack to actually start playing at the beginning of this game and not spot the Viking 13/14 points before the wake up. I also expect to see the Pack line up 4 wide with Nelson and Jones on the outside and Jennings and Cobb in the slots. I've been waiting for it all year, and since there was no coal in my stocking, I think its time I get it. Any case, I expect a much different game this Saturday and I expect a win. That said, if somehow the Viking win the turnover battle and this game, I do wonder what AP could do against the Falcons. I my experience Viking fans don't tend to live in the past. They usually try to live the dream of what their future could be. Usually its far fetched and eventually disappointing, but for a moment, right now, they feel a convergence of their blissful REM time and actually waking reality. Still, I feel it's probably just a dream with in a dream. Last note, the Division title means nothing with out this game.

on January 3rd, 2013 at 08:55pm

Bravo, LDF! Best post of the week. Excellent job of summing everything up. Good to see we're keeping it going!

on January 3rd, 2013 at 10:20pm

My point was that you say the cold is an advantage to your offense that throws 50 times a game and spreads em out 5 wide. I say that that same advantage is to our offense that will run it down your throats 40 times a game. Watch the game tape please of the last 2 times we played you. Not a single soul on your defense wants to tackle Adrian Peterson. Maybe Wilson, Raji, and Matthews, so that makes 3/11, and we don't run to Matthews side, and when we do, Kyle Rudolph is buring him. The cold will only help the Vikes and our true BLACK and BLUE style of football. We will control the ball and game with our running and play action, and when Rodgers will have the ball he will be flustered by our great defense, and the cold will affect his throws/hands and his receivers catches/hands. The cold will help us, not you. We thrive with our backs to the wall, we are 4-0 since our playoffs started 4 weeks ago. Now that we have the MVP and his charisma, we will ride his back to another victory again. SKOL.

winagain baby, it sounds like u already have started drinking since thet play on sat. nite not sunday, and we know u don't drink and get drunk in the humpty dome, hell, your lb greenway even told u u have to get drunk to make some noise, even though we all know half of it is piped in. it is good to hear from the queen fans when they win 3 games in a row for the 1st time in 3 years. since 4 took the money and left. we all know viking fans wish they had what we had and are envious and jealous, listen to barreiro sunday sermon last week, he said it also, and he is a homer for u. have a great day everyone.

on January 3rd, 2013 at 12:54pm

Yes I have attended games at Lambeau I have been sworn at threatened for cheering for the opponent. thrown up on. for crap sakes Packer fans drink beer in the bathroom while relieving themselves. I stand b y my initial post. Packer Fans have a drinking problem. I will be attending Saturday evening sober with my son. I invite Packer fans to do the same. I find it hilarious you assume I am a Vikings Fan when actually am a Football fan first. Saturday I get a chance to watch some amazing Pro bowl players on both teams. hopefully the drunks don't ruin it! Packer fans will probably pove me right.

on January 4th, 2013 at 01:37pm

Viking fans still wearing that mask of false bravado. They claim to have the advantage playing in the elements. A dome team? The same dome team that has failed to win a single game this season outdoors? Really?

on January 4th, 2013 at 08:19am

As a life long Vikings fan this has ended up as a great season considering I was expecting maybe 5 wins. However I just do not see the Vikings going into Lambeau and winning. Maybe it is all the heartbreaking losses I have witnessed in my 34 years of life but I am not as confident as some of the other Vikings posts on this site apparently. Either way I hope it is another great game and maybe the Vikes will surprise me for once. But like I said I just dont see it happening. The one thing I did want to bring up that does bug me is how packer fans consistently tell me to stop living in the past if I mention 2004 at Lambeau, but then they follow it up "how many super bowls do you have?". Pretty sure those are both in the past! Just dont understand that comment if you are telling me to not bring up the past. Anyway like I said I hope it is a good game Sat night. Go Vikes!
