Packers XLV

A November to Un-Remember

Posted November 16th, 2015 @ 02:11am

Halloween wasn't that long ago. On that night we passed out treats and perhaps imbibed on treats and looked forward to the matchup of unbeatens in Denver between the Pack and the Broncos.

Nothing has been the same since--for either team (though Denver's collapse unfolded after  easily dispatching with the Pack ). The place we find the Pack sitting is unfamiliar territory. They look like a shadow of their former electric selves: out of sync, off balance and about to fade out of sight.

I've been tough on the defense the past few weeks--surrendering 1,500 yards in three games was tough to watch. But this embarrassing loss is not on the defense. True, they couldn't get off the field when it mattered most, surrendering that late touchdown after whiffing on Matthew Stafford a couple of times and missing tackles on Golden Tate's big play. But for the most part, the defense held the Lions in check. As it should have; the Lions' offense has been putrid all season.

The Packers lost this game because for a third straight week, they couldn't move the ball. The running game was non-existent. And for a third straight week, Rodgers didn't look like Rodgers. He just doesn't look comfortable in any phase of the game right now and he's getting pounded.

You have to wonder if Mike McCarthy decides to do an about face and take back the play calling duties. It would look like a panic move, but when you lose to the Lions at Lambeau, and play the way they've played this month, it's not too soon to panic.

I think it's safe to say the wheels are off the bus right now. The defense might have been good enough to bail the team out on this day, but special teams did them no favors. From the play that flipped the game, the kickoff return that opened the second half, to Mason Crosby's shank at the end. Of course, if Matt Prater kicks a couple of extra points, Crosby never takes the field.

This was supposed to be an opponent and a game that got the Pack back on track, where the offense once again Lambeau Leaped to its heart content and the Lions were dealt with like a Bloomington dentist. Instead, this head-shaking performance raises more questions than we've needed to raise in years.

1. What's wrong with Rodgers?

2. Why can't the offensive line run block any more?

3. Should McCarthy take back play calling duties?

4. Why can't the defense record a sack?

5. How do they plan on slowing AP next week?

You can go ahead and look for silver linings in this one. Maybe you liked the 10 catches between the two tight ends, or the emergence of Jared Abbrederis. Maybe you liked the overall play of the defense, the last drive notwithstanding.

Bottom line: the Pack has lost its identity as well as its hold on the North. Next they travel to play the team they are suddenly looking up to. A team that's won five straight and will take the field oozing confidence. After what we've witnessed the past few weeks, it's hard to believe the Pack will be ready to compete for 60 minutes.

And to make matters worse, we'll still be in November.

Lucky me: I get to do some trash talking with KFAN Vox Paul Allen Tuesday night at Joe Senser's in Bloomington, from 5:30 to 7. We're raising money for Loaves & Fishes MN. There will be a silent auction, including a pair of tickets to next Sunday's game. Former Viking great Carl Eller will be on hand, not that P.A. needs a wing man right now. It's one of those rare times where I don't have much ammunition. Actually, I really have no ammunition. Come on out to say hey, if you can. Maybe we can convince ourselves we can win next Sunday.

DS...something must have happened during the bye week on this team. The Nelson argument would make sense, if we didn't go 6-0 earlier w/o him.

Dave, When in the world are they going to FIRE CAPERS. Packers have now given up over 1,800- yards in 4 games. Have Big Mike take over play calling and get Janis playing wide out ?

Everyone needs to calm down. I am a Viking fan who greatly admires the body of work achieved in Green Bay in the last 10 years. The Vikings still have a tough schedule ahead of them and the Pack don't. The Vikings offense still needs to show a consistent passing offense. This is not a crack at Bridgewater. It is a shot at their receiving corp; they cannot get open, save Diggs. Stop AP and you stop their offense. Defensively, run off tackle on either side, the LB corp has long lacked lateral speed and still susceptible those runs. Greenway cannot go sideline to sideline anymore, and Barr is hurt. At the other LB spot is an unknown. Also, pass long, the CBs are prone to pass interference. GB will get back on track, even if they lose Sunday. We need our NFC North teams to be strong; it's boring otherwise.

Shocking and disgusting. The alarm bells at 1265 Lombardi Ave. should be deafening. You can't excuse "playing an undefeated team on the road" about this one. The Pack is in trouble. Big trouble. Deep trouble. And no sign they will dig out of it.

WOW!! I am not smart enough to explain this last game. So...I turn to my friend The Voice....Voice give us the voice of reason on what is going on. GO PACK GO !!

The Lions did everything they could to try and lose that game yesterday. Thank God Crosby channeled his 2012 self. It's time somebody mentions the obvious here, McCarthy's job security needs to be called into question. He's making this team fail.

There hasn't been a more shocking turn of events for Packer fans in this state since the summer of '09. We survived that Viking's run, we'll survive this one as well. Rodgers needs to loosen up and trust someone not named Jordy to catch a ball.

A few weeks ago Dave from Shakopee said the Panthers were an over-rated 7-0 team. Apparently, the Packers are the over-rated team. Time to start worrying if the pack is going to make the playoffs. Sure as heck the road to the super bowl is NOT going through Lambeau. Delicious!

From my perch in the north end zone yesterday, what I could tell is the offensive rhythm went pretty well in the first series, but stalled out, yielding just 3 points. The defense wasn't too bad in the first half, and most of the second as well. But where the train ran off the tracks was the 2nd half kickoff return. Special teams for the most part have been improved this season, but the coverage on that return was terrible. WR's weren't able to get open...why, I have no idea. I've heard more than my share of getting Janis out there to stretch the field...well, duh? If the coaches, who see him every day in practice thought he could do that, they'd have put him out there by now? He's obviously not ready for this. Larry's going to disagree with me on this, but I don't care right now - BEAT THE GUY IN FRONT OF YOU!!! That's how you win in this league - not by running this play or that play making a difference, but by running the play called and MAKING IT WORK!!! And one more thing - as a fan base, let's face facts here - Packer fans have had it awfully good over the last 20+ years. Are we going to let some adversity bring us down? Sure, the expectations foisted on this team are always high, but that's why we're in this situation right now. Do you think we're expecting too much out of this team? Maybe. Maybe not. But think back to a year ago, when the Packers were looking up at the Lions at this stage of the season, and as I recall, they ended up in the NFCCG. I'm not saying I'm expecting a similar scenario to play out, but at the same time, things may not be as bleak as they appear. In conclusion, perhaps it's best our expectations should be tempered just a bit.

The last three games played by this team are arguably the worst they've played since the late 70's or early 80's. What a horrible way to go the game next Sunday with the viqueens. We have absolutely no basis for talking trash with their fans. None! This must be how the purple fans feel every year.

Voice, I agree with a lot you said, ON beating your man, all I'm saying is you can't do it every time, so why not make it easier and do something they have not seen all the time, it's called coaching and schemes. and yes, I have been calling for Janis, I have watched and played enough football to see a player or not, and he can play. like I said even if 8-10 plays a game. he a had a great catch in the chargers game for 30-35 yds. they have no speed but Cobb, and he is more quick than fast. I was the only one that said they would have a hard time yesterday, so I think I do know what i'm talking about. this has been going on for a month not just yesterday. I watch with my eyes not what happened 20 years ago and then should just happen again just because the stats say so and history, Dave goes off that a lot when I listen and read him, I don't. they Have no SPEED at RB and WR. I think Tretter and Barclay will play better then what Lang and Bulaga were doing cause they were hurting. Get Crockett in there or Harris , they need a spark, and like I said on Pre game post there confidence is down I don't care what 12 says. You Have to play this game with Passion, confidence and swagger, and right now they have none. so to help them get going, Run a half back option from Cobb, a reverse. did you notice they picked up 12 yds on a slant pass yesterday and 8 on another, tried 4 all game. I don't get it. Unless they come out and try some new things, they will lose 24-13 to vikes. it's fun to have some challenges this year though isn't it? Go Packers.

Screech--You're a typical provincial Minnesota moron who has probably never been outside the borders of this frozen hellhole you call home. So you just keep wearing your Helga horns and painting your face and playing with your little toy shields and swords while rooting for that lavender wearing loser of a franchise that is on it's 55th year of abject futility in its pursuit of a championship cause here's a newsflash. The pathetic queens will never, ever have a fraction of the success at winning titles that the Packers have.

Normally I come on here and rip on Wisconsin for being filled with alcoholics in denial, extreme obesity, bigots who have elected an evil governor, and other statistically proven facts. The reason I've done this is because I haven't had much material to make fun of on the field. But now I can make jokes about how Rodgers is as scared of throwing down field as the average Wisconsin citizen is afraid of marrying someone they didn't meet at a family reunion. Or how the only runs bigger than the ones being given up by the Packers defense are the runs staining Wisconsinites underwear brown whenever they hear someone with dark skin might be moving in close by. Kicking your ass on Sunday will be so sweet.

Hang on Loyalists to this site. The Packer hating scum will be gone soon. They can all meet in the Viking Trophy room since that has a lot of open space. Hang in the Pack will be back!! GO PACK GO !!
