Obituary: 2016 Packers Fought Lengthy Illness

Posted November 21st, 2016 @ 01:11pm

We are very sorry to announce the passing of the 2016 Packers, following a lengthy illness. The Packers were diagnosed with gastric indigestion while in Denver in the fall of 2015, following a severe punch to their solar plexus, and never fully recovered.

Over the past decade, under the stewardship of caretaker Mike McCarthy, the Packers flourished like very few of their peers, and were looked upon as a model franchise. They have been led by two time MVP Aaron Rodgers, whose gaudy numbers and late game heroics were the envy of all. But Rodgers' game has not been as sharp of late, and the lack of a suitable running game and elite receiving options have dulled his razor's edge.

Where the Packers' illness really took hold was on the defensive side of the ball. They have been historically bad over the past month, unable to sustain what was a decent start to their season in the fall of 2016. The disease started to take hold in Atlanta. Since then, they went home for treatment and when the symptoms worsened, they visited specialists in Nashville and Washington DC, but by then the disease had spread throughout the entire organization.

There are those that refuse to believe the end has come for the 2016 Packers. They point to the six remaining games on the schedule, including games against each division foe--not to mention just a two game spread between themselves and the division leaders.

But in reality, the 2016 Packers took their last breaths at FedEx Field on Sunday night. They are survived by most of the 53 players on their roster. Their front office and coaching staff are fighting the same illness. It's too soon to know their fate, but some will be providing thoughts and prayers on their behalf. Many more will not.

A memorial service and burial is scheduled for January 1st, 2017 in Detroit, of all places. In lieu of flowers, supporters are asked to donate to the Elliot Wolf for GM Fund.

RIP, 2016 Packers.

GB was DOA at the start of the season. Many here tried telling you that Dave, but you refused to listen. We tried to tell you there were too many holes, that Rodgers' best days were behind him, TT wasn't drafting well at all over the last several years, and your coach was overrated. Now there will be a rebuild, and the legacy of TT and Mcgriddle will not be known for glory, but how they wasted Rodgers' prime.

Voice.....You again take my comments way out of proportion. I have never said build your roster on veterans. I said supplement your roster with some key additions. Of course you build your core thru the draft. Heck...I am the biggest draft nik on this post. When you have a future Hall of Fame QB you build to go for the top. Even the Cowboys, Patriots, Broncos, and even the Vikes have supplemented rosters by trades or signings of key veterans. I have never said blow up your roster with veterans but key supplements. The little we have seen of Jared Cook is positive when we can get him on the field....but thats all TT did this season. I can give you a list of key veterans the fore mentioned teams have aquired to prove my point. Voice....go have a New Glarus Mad Cow and calm down. GO PACK GO !!

on November 21st, 2016 at 01:49pm know I love ya, buddy. Our philosophies may differ, but at the end of the day we both want the same end result. It's all in the manner of how you get there. I'm going to tell a story - a few weeks ago, I had a minor car accident where all I really needed to have fixed on my 10 year old car was the hood, of which I had no intention of filing a claim for with my insurance company (especially since I dropped collision coverage). Anyway, I went to a nearby U Pull R Parts salvage yard to look for a replacement hood. After sifting through probably a dozen or so cars that were of the vintage I was looking for, I only found one hood that was suitable, condition wise. What's the point to this story? There's plenty of players to pick from, but very few that measure up. :-)

New coach? How about PJ Fleck, Western Michigan.

Want to know how this ends......see Packers Season, circa 2005. Favre played all 16 games for that 4 win team too. When you only build through the draft, and consistently pick in the 20's, sometimes it catches up to you.

Voice.....Will you finally concede to me that you can not build a team only thru the draft. Ted Thompson....soon to be ex GM will be playing golf with the Twins ex GM Terry Ryan and discussing the old days of building teams thru the draft and staying young. Voice....arent you sick of free agent college players falling down and out of position constantly?? TT's only free agent veteran signing....Jared Cook showed some ability when he can play but we have no other veterans to step up. Draft and builds time is done. Get some quality decision makers in place for the future or I may have to take up Classical Music and Poetry. GO PACK GO !!

Synner - Cry me a river. Try losing 4 starting offensive tackles, starting quarterback, backup quarterback (most of the year), starting running back, starting defensive tackle (at least half the year) and starting guard. All Vikings fan are playing their tiny violins for you. Alarms were going off when TT had that goofy 1st 53 man roster. He's been behind the 8-ball all year with the roster. And MM isn't smart enough to adapt to anything other than what you've seen the last 16 or so games. When A-a-ron isn't able to pull things out of his arse or the officials aren't throwing hankies to extend drives, MM is just lost. Say hello to mediocrity. You'll be there a while until (and if) you rebuild. And that may be too late for A-A-ron.

Love seeing Hundley come in for mop-up duty in a blowout loss yet again. You still think you'll get a 2nd rounder for the kid next year, THC? Your team is stupid if it brings back Clay Matthews next season at his current salary. Guy is done.

Voice....Nice story I get your point. But lets do both ways this off season. GO PACK GO !!

OSSG...I absolutely will not concede my point. I remain as adamant about it as ever. In 2016 professional football, it is impossible to sustain FULL CONSISTENCY over an extended period of time. The draft system of reverse order is next to impossible to beat. Drafting in the bottom 3rd for ten seasons or more will eventually catch up to you. DRAFT AND DEVELOP WORKS!!! Want proof? Check out the Cowboys. Jerry Jones finally figured out that when you draft in the top half for several seasons, you build the best O-line you possibly can, THEN start building everything else. The reverse draft system was designed for parity. And don't give me a bunch of crap about supplementing with veteran players because it's unsustainable approach. What happens when all you have are veterans on the bench? It means you're getting old and you somehow need to replace those guys. And don't say replace them with veterans because a revolving door of veterans doesn't build consistency. It may work in Madden football, it may work in fantasy football, but it doesn't work in the NFL. You have to have a constant flow of new talent coming in. Hell...Vince Lombardi thought he could take down Father Time by hanging on to the old guys, but Father Time wins every time. YOU HAVE TO HAVE NEW TALENT!!! And where do you get new talent? Where else...the draft!!! Football is a game of human confrontation, and the day it stops being that is the day I die. As pro football fans, we should never have expectations, because expectations are nothing more than resentments waiting to happen. We should never expect to win. And if you can't handle losing, then pro football isn't for you, because make no mistake about it - YOU WILL LOSE. And I don't mean to come across as harsh, but if you're afraid of losing, then classical music and poetry might be for you (with all due respect, of course).

Roscoe Lombardi here, fret not for the future is still bright. Remember, Green Bay has the third youngest team in the league, these young guys will be even better next year. Just remember this advice my daddy, the famous coach of the Washington Redskins once told me: "Son, flush the toilet with your feet after taking a dump, so you don't have to wash your hands." Prediction time: GB - 52, Phi - 7 Carson Wentz is a Podunk pipsqueak. Aaron will go over 400 with 7 total TDs. GB will end up 10 - 6 and win he North and the Super Bowl. Book it! Period!

Oh, and one more thing...for all of you voting on THC's poll who are part of the 70% that want McCarthy gone, you all must be sick and tired of winning. Because if McCarthy gets fired, that's exactly what will happen. Firing McCarthy WILL NOT FIX THIS TEAM!!!

As I said 2 weeks ago, The Packers do not want to lose Eliot Wolf, they already have lost John Dorsey and Reggie Mckenzie, and the guy in Seattle too forgot about him. all doing great so far. I think he will just step down, like turner did. hahhaha. they also need to let capers go, need a fresh approach. it's been long enough. I know they have injuries, But you can't have 8 free agents on a team with a franchise qb on it. I remember everyone bitching about the same thing when 4 was here, build around him, is all we heard. that is where Voice and disagree. I don't want 4 or 5 guys added every year, but 1 or 2 added every year. 12 will be gone in 4-5 years. then what? Voice is exactly right on drafting late for 20 years now. S.F had a 3 year run, now there on bottom, vikes have had 4 top ten picks in last 10 years. dallas same thing, The Packers have been more consistent at any making playoffs then anyone but the Patriots. like I said b4, were spoiled, but that is what makes for great fans also. always wanting more, but, knowing we will have some down time like everyone else has too.Look around the league, where has Miami, Philly, Washington, and many more teams been? we will be back next year, it may be fun to pick in top 10 again, been along time, I'll just ask my viking friends they will know what it's like. Keep our heads up boys and girls, we have been very lucky for 25 years now to watch these Packers. I will not stop watching I know that. I said we were done in 2010 with all those injuries. and looked the fool, not saying it yet. GO PACKERS.

The Wisconsin Media has coddled Ted Thompson for much too long. Many of his low round Draft Picks, and Unrestricted Free Agents are now showing their true colors. He's blown potential championship teams for us because of the way he operates. It's certainly time for new regime. On for Elliot Wolf.

Wow...I noticed they have fallen out of your power rankings. It may have been a couple weeks since i checked the blog, but Ive been reading this page for the past 3-4 years now and they have always been in the top 10 or close. Its been surreal to watch the self destruction. I grew up in the shadow of Lambeau in the 80s and gave the players rides to practice in middle school. I will be 40 next year and after watching all those bad teams do no better than 8-8 in the 80s... I can still say this has been a far more disappointing season. Maybe we got to used to the success. But I struggle to comprehend exactly what has happened. So many places to point the finger for a team that was regarded as top 5 in the NFL in preseason. How the mighty fall. If indeed the run of what 11 straight playoff appearances is over...its been fun. I hope they figure out how to right the ship.
