Packers XLV

Turn Out the Lights...

Posted December 17th, 2018 @ 02:12pm

If there is a silver lining to this dumpster fire of a season, maybe we won't see and hear any more State Farm commercials featuring Aaron Rodgers in 2019. Maybe they'll find a new pitchman/woman. Maybe that's wishful thinking.

Rodgers and the Packers saw their flickering playoff hopes officially snuffed out at Soldier Field in a game that was actually there for the taking. When Matt Nagy inexplicably tried a fake punt near midfield that backfired and the Pack went down the field to score and tie the game at 14, I allowed myself to hope, for just a moment, that Rodgers' domination of the Bears would continue.

Then when Tarik Cohen fumbled near the red zone as the fourth quarter started and the Packers recovered, there was the opportunity to go down the field and take the lead. Instead, we got sack, incomplete, incomplete, punt. The third down play was an overthrow to Marquez Valdez-Scantling that Rodgers used to make in his sleep. The Bears took over, scored and that was that.

This game looked a lot like just about every road game this season. Opportunities to make big plays were there, but Rodgers was unable to convert. The offense's inability on third downs this season has been as bad as I can remember in the Favre-Rodgers era. And now they are one game away from serving up the first winless road record in the 100 years the franchise has been playing football.

Any hopes Joe Philbin may have harbored of jump starting this offense and earning serious consideration for the head coaching job are out the window. The Packers need to identify someone who can light a fire under Rodgers and get him playing consistently like the QB we've watched the last ten years. Because the 2018 version has been inconsistent and downright average.

Defensively, there are signs of positivity, but we saw more missed tackles, untimely penalties and missed opportunities. Rookie Josh Jackson has regressed, while undrafted Tyler Lancaster looks like he can be a rotational player on the defensive line. Brian Gutekunst needs to seriously upgrade the linebacker and safety positions in the offseason to help Mike Pettine, or whoever is running the defense in 2019.

The Bears are legit, with a loaded defense and a young offense that will only get better. If the Packers are going to get back in the hunt in the North next season, they will need to hit a home run with their head coaching decision and hope that Gutey makes the most of the team's cap space and extra draft picks. The Bears went from worst to first. Everything changes year to year. After the first back to back losing season since Favre was a Falcon, the Pack has plenty of work to do.

And what they will need most is for Aaron Rodgers to look like Aaron Rodgers again.

It's not surprising that there are downs after being up for so long. It is only surprising that the dip comes now. I certainly felt like Mike Sherman wasn't helping the team win and now we find ourselves in a similar situation. The fires must be relighted. I wonder if the Bears will proclaim themselves the "kings" of the north or if they'll just go with the more reasonable Division Champions. Truthfully as long as the Patriots don't win the superbowl, I'm cool. Even if the Vikings somehow pull it out, I'm cool. Bears win it , I'm cool. There wouldn't even be Packers without the Bears.

RIP 2018 Packers. Back to Back disaster seasons couldn't happened to a more smug and deserving fanbase and the fact that Pack fans don't have a Rodgers injury to blame this season is just delicious. This year revealed what everyone not drunk on cheese has known for years, the Packers are a floating turd buoyed by Rodgers. The unfortunate thing is that Packer fans now must come to grips with the fact that Rodgers is no longer good enough to keep the shitship from sinking. Its gotta suck swallowing that shitpill. On the bright side, Pack fans have a head start to an offseason of watching old film of Hornung, while drinking Old Milwaukee and diddling themselves from the comfort of their 1970s model Winnebagos.

Full re-build mode now. You guys will be worse before you get better. Possibly compete for a wild card spot by 2021 or so.

The Green Bay Packers have a worse record than the Cleveland Browns. The same can be said about each teams future prospects.

Cane what mode are our Vikings in,Choke Mode? What a homer, stupid mudduck,I can't wait for the inevitable choke to see more of your stupid comments, never win anything with Cousins!!

Oh man. The whole future of title town rests on the shoulders of one player. Not to say that it hasn't before, but now fans are starting to take off the rose colored glasses and it is bad. I have never seen such vitriol from the Packer fan base and I can understand why. A whole generation of Pack fans have never had a season start without the expectations of a Super Bowl berth. Playoffs were always just a givin. Now fans are literally losing their shit, and it is fascinating. If they don't hit an absolute home run in the draft and free agency, and find the right fit at coach, the Green Bay Packers might be looking at a decade of "Lions like" football. Wow.

Roscoe Lombardi here, well now I'll have to admit I may have been a bit too optimistic with my earlier predictions. Like my daddy, former Redskins coach, Vince Lombardi used to say, "Uglier than grandpa's toenails." All I know is McCarthy would have won that game. This only further proves that Rodgers is washed up without McCarthy, like the Monster without Frankenstein, like flowers without sunshine, like a Packers fan without a fury, four-legged cousin-wife. Like my daddy used to say, "Son, if brains were leather, he couldn't saddle a flea."

Your squad sucks so much that a storm of yellow hankies wouldn't have saved your season. I tried--Lordy, I tried. Well, maybe next year. Yeah, riiiight.

Moron! Are you drunk again? Get your wrinkled butt home and do the laundry and quit flapping your toothless gob about you being a fake Vikings fan. Baboon!

As the Packers began to mark their centenniel season earlier this year I noticed something in their history that gave me an uneasy feeling early on. Good things have not happened with the club in years ending in "8." In 2008 they went through the bitter break-up with Favre and went 6-10 on the season after coming within a step of the Super Bowl the prior year. In 1998 the Pack was robbed of a Wild Card playoff win in San Francisco by an officiating error on the Jerry Rice fumble which set up the last seconds Steve Young to Terrell Owens winning td pass. The defeat denied the Packers a possible third straight trip to the Super Bowl. In its wake hc Mike Holmgren left for Seattle and de Reggie White retired. In 1988 the team went 4-12. In 1978 the Packers missed the NFC Central title and the playoffs on a tiebreaker after tying for first at 8-7-1. Fifty years ago in 1968 came the collapse of the Packers' great dynasty of the '60's. In their first season without Vince Lombardi as coach the Pack went from "threepeat" World Champions to 6-7-1 also-rans. Ten years before that they had what is still regarded as their all-time worst season; a 1-10-1 in 1958. In 1948 the end of the age of Curly Lambeau began to come into view. The team's 3-9 record was the first losing season in 15 years and just the second of 3 the Packers' founding father would have during his 30 years with the club. After another even worse record in '49 he would leave amid conflict and controversy. In 1938 the heavily favored Packers lost the NFL Championship Game to the Giants 23-17. And in 1928 they finished 4th in the then single division league with a pedestrian 6-4-3 record. However, it should be noted that as often as not the Packers rebounded to bigger and better things in years following these "crazy 8's." 2008 was followed by 8 straight playoff seasons and just two years later a Super Bowl Championship. After a slight dip to .500 in '99 the Pack came back with 5 winning seasons and 4 straight in the playoffs. Following the '58 debacle the club hired a fella named Lombardi as coach and the rest, as they say, is history. Lambeau's Packers came back from their '38 loss to the Giants and squashed them in the 1939 Championship Game 27-0. And the follow-up to 1928 was the first 3 of the franchise's 13 World Championships for the next 3 seasons in a row.

O, and lest I fail to mention: The 4-12 in '88 was followed up by a 10-6 in 1989 as "the Majik Man" led the "Kardiac Pack" to within a tiebreaker of the playoffs. Two years after that the Packers brought in Ron Wolf as GM, then Mike Holmgren as HC, Brett Favre and Reggie White. And then they went on a quarter century run of success: 21 winning seasons out of 26. 19 playoff seasons. 12 Division titles. Three trips to the Super Bowl and 2 Super Bowl Championships. Most franchises, including especially the one just to our west, would die to have that kind of record. The Packers have a down season this year but as history shows the Pack will be back.

Ha Mrs mudduck I wouldn't talk about butts because you have three of them,I'd sit with you on the couch and watch our overrated choking Vikings but there's no room!!

Bravo, excellent comments packerlifer, We need a constant reminder of the great organization and all there accomplishments east of us across the river, over here my fellow stupid mudducks get all giddy over an NFC north title every ten years or so and then an epic collapse choke,I hope we never get to another super bowl and I don't think we will because I don't want to be the first 0 for 5 chokers!! Someday my fellow stupid mudducks will get it,Keep up the good work packerlifer!!

Great history, Packerlifer. You did a lot of homework on that . Very interesting facts.. I have said it since week 4, #12 has not been right all year. And its not cause of injury. He has got into some bad habits, just like #4 did. He needs to be coached up again on his footwork. He missed 4 passes Sunday with guys 5 yards open. The throw on int, he was 2 ft. behind Graham in end zone. either Danica is too much women for him or he needs to start eating some cheese again. Lol. I just know he is not having a good year. The defense has been just fine, the O has let us down all year. When is last time we said that on this blog??. I have heard in some media posts now Fitzgerald's name has come up. Could I be onto something here? Maybe there reading this site Davey, hahaha, we will see. We just need the right guy. Its a big choice to end # 12's career in next 4 years . Go Packers

Packer fans what do you think of Dabo Sweeny as next head coach, like to hear your thoughts.

Rodgers makes the pro bowl........ah, WTF?

on December 19th, 2018 at 09:02pm

84 million dollar man ain't going to the pro bowl, but he is going to the playoffs. He's also 1-0-1 as a viking qb against the washed up qb in green bay. He needed a field goal kicker to be 2-0, but you can't have everything.

on December 20th, 2018 at 03:48pm

Yeah on a gift penalty Greg, your not in the playoffs yet and he's never won a playoff game Greg, never beat Rodgers in the playoffs Greg where it matters!!

on December 20th, 2018 at 05:20pm

Why isn't the 84 million dollar man going to the pro bowl,Maybe to many pick sixes and fumbles, great investment!!! Wtf??

on December 20th, 2018 at 07:50am

A gift penalty(LMAO)…….a gift Shiancoe call and Rodgers has never been to the Super Bowl.

on December 20th, 2018 at 08:33pm

which was worse in that game?...…...the Kendricks sack or the Matthews sack? I personally think the Kendricks sack was more laughable. Lost on a gift penalty(bwahbwahbwah)…….coming from a packer fan. You can't make this schit up.

on December 21st, 2018 at 07:37pm

Yeah well point being when he got there he won,are you blaming all your playoff losses and super bowl losses on officiating, sounds typical!! Don't understand what Rodgers had to do with some penalty on shincoe, huh
