Packers XLV

I've Always Liked Zebras.

You know, everything is so different when you go to the game. You don't see replays. You don't hear the commentary. You just watch the game and experience the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat.

I left Lambeau on Monday night, absolutely amazed that the Packers pulled out the win. From the opening flea flicker, through the three turnovers, it appeared like this was Detroit's night. And then I got back to my hotel and checked Twitter. And I saw the angst and the consternation. Tuesday morning, I turned on ESPN's Get Up and saw the highlights.

There's no question: the officials screwed the Lions. The penalty on the Allison hit. The non-call on Will Redmond for pass interference. Lazard's TD (he was down at the one). And of course, the two hands to the face penalties on Trey Flowers. All bad calls. All went the Pack's way. They should have had to kick the go ahead field goal with a minute and a half left, and Matthew Stafford should have had a chance to give Matt Prater a chance to win the game. The way he was kicking, they only needed to get to midfield.

Officiating in the NFL sucks. It sucks because we now have cameras that catch and show us everything. It sucks because there are a lot of new, inexperienced officials. It sucks because they feel like they have to throw the flag all the time to prevent being criticized for missing something. Every fan base feels like they're being picked on, but only Vikings fans feel like there's a conspiracy to help the Packers.

The last game I attended, the Eagles game, also ended on a horrible non-call. When Philly intercepted Rodgers on a deflection at the goal line, Marquez Valdez-Scantling was being absolutely mugged. His arms were wrapped up and he had no chance to make the catch. The play should have been reviewed, and maybe it was, but it was clear pass interference that prevented the Packers from having a chance to win the game.

On this October night, the Packers were handed a gift. But they did a lot of good things to put themselves in that position. The Packers defense was fantastic, after giving up the 66 yard flea flicker and the other bomb early in the game. They held the running game to 56 yards (while gaining 170 themselves), they held them to under 300 yards for the game. The three Packers turnovers turned into just three field goals. They held the Lions to just 23% efficiency on third down and sacked Stafford three times.

Offensively, they dealt with injuries all night. Aaron Jones appeared to injure his shoulder early and was not himself all night. Jamaal Williams rescued the running game with a great night. And then there was Rodgers, who for much of the game was without his top three wide receivers, but made do by resurrecting Marcedes Lewis and by leaning on Allen Lazard who made the most of his opportunity with some great contested catches down the stretch.

The talker coming out of the game was the blown calls by the officials, and rightfully so. But big picture, we saw a Packer team that leaned on its defense to keep them in a game when they were minus three in takeaways, a team whose quarterback again showed that he is still firmly planted in his prime and a team that is poised to improve as they get healthier.

The Pack's 5-1 and 3-0 in the division. They've played like one of the top teams in the NFL, despite being led by a first time, rookie head coach. After the Monday night Fail Mary, after the hands to the face non call in the playoff game against the Cardinals, we will not apologize for catching some breaks in this one. We're on to the Raiders.

Does Old South Side Guy not realized the call happened twice? I'm beginning to think so.

on October 15th, 2019 at 01:05pm

Old south side guy - what about the first hands to the face penalty which would have been 4th and 21? 3 plays later was the Lazard TD. If you look at the replay the flag doesn't come out until Rogers is on his back a while after the phantom hands.... What about the personal fowl call when GB was on 3rd down and kept the drive going?? Dave had it right when he said the officials screwed the lions.

on October 15th, 2019 at 01:33pm

Wilbur and Packer Troll: Troy Vincent a NFL V/P and head of rules committee said the call on the first hands to the face was a correct call. He agreed that the 2nd call was incorrect. So according to the NFL both of your takes are irrelevant on the first penalty. GO PACK GO !!

on October 15th, 2019 at 06:49pm

Boy you can sure sense angryguy77s frustration and disappointment with his overrated purple slugs with his babbling dipshit comments, win something and get back to us dipshit!!

on October 15th, 2019 at 06:59pm

Great post dave. I'm a viking fan but have always tuned into your commentary on paul allen show. As a viking fan, it does seem like packers get more calls. But that's part of the game. I've talked to fellow viking fans and officiating drives then nuts. I ask them why do you watch then? It's the new nfl, games are decided by officiating half the time. I still like it that way. Packers took advantage of the bad calls but also held lions to field goals in the red zone. Lions score one td on aby of those drives and it's over. Good luck next week. Go vikes!

I've seen the Minnesota Twins win 2 titles. Does that make my team, the Twins, dominant? Well, it must, because winning 2 makes you dominant and a big deal in football. Dam, I love this site. Thanks everyone. Oh, and just for the record, the two the Twins won were legit. I didn't realize the greatness of the Twins until I tied it to packer football.

on October 15th, 2019 at 09:01pm

I'm used to it. Phantom face mask penalty for a retry on the hail Mary? Sure. Why not. And its not just Vikings fans that know you are the Refs pets. It's really disgusting. It's tough enough to be a lions fan when your team is screwing up. Add in the refs and its almost unwatchable. The funny thing is u have a good team. You don't need this and it cheapens the game.

on October 15th, 2019 at 09:22pm

Greg you are truly an idiot, what do the twins have to do with football, the packers have won a lot more championships than two and were all legit,we have zero moron, mom shouldn’t let you use the computer, put nuk in your mouth and go to bed!!!

on October 15th, 2019 at 09:30pm

Only Vikings fans think this Davey? You might want to check in with Bear and Lion fans on this. You can't be serious, Dave? Central division fans see this in Green Bay continually. Go visit any Detroit board, Dave. You know the packer favoritism is nuts. Just admit it Dave. The cover is all officiating is bad works every single time though.

on October 15th, 2019 at 10:12am

No, it's not technology that makes modern day reffing suck. It's the absolute fellatio done by the league to their darling teams and players. For those of us outside your bubble, what happened last night happens in a lot of game GB plays. The difference here is this was more obvious that others. Remember the hail mary against det? Remember that was made possible due to a phantom facemask call in on the chosen one? Lets go back to 2010. GB doesn't make the playoffs if the refs don't give GB 14 points against Minn that year. You cannot take positives for your team out of this dave. By all rights your team didn't do enough to win on its own. You should be concerned that your team's record is fraudulent just like so many times in years past. In the playoffs, you will get exposed again.

on October 15th, 2019 at 10:13am

Hey Angry guy, did the Kittens roar enough to win with those 3 opportunities in the red zone? Nope! Did their offense dominate the 2nd half? Nope! Did they convert 3 turnovers to none? Nope! Are these the signs of a winning team? Nope! Dave didnt say the Pack deserved to win, he all but admitted they stole this game. Sorry you dont like it when Green and Gold constantly reminds you of all the reasons Purple and Gold have to be bitter! Good news! You can take out your frustration on the Kittens yourself this week, and then enjoy the TNF bye when the Foreskins come to make a deposit at the bank! Which one of your Cousins will show up to the party?

on October 15th, 2019 at 10:24am

midwesturban.............I guess pointing out the truth triggers you. You know what's not the sign of a winning team? Getting mulligans. Must be nice to get so many do overs huh? BTW, it's hard for an offense to dominate when the other team is allowed to have 13 men on the field and not get flagged. Check out the game with 5:22 left in the second......But hey, Det shot themselves in the foot by having 12 men on the field amiright? Like I said, this isn't the end of the world because like clockwork, you clowns will get overhyped and then GB will get EXPOSED in the playoffs like they've done for the last decade.

on October 15th, 2019 at 10:31am

Dave. Great job! Love to hear fans own up when they get calls. Your columns and comments in radio are always logical! I do get sick of fans who always look at other calls to justify the ones they get. The fail Mary was a joke...but how does that help Detroit? And they got screwed on MNF in Seattle as well. I see where people come up with conspiracies when ever 50-50 call goes against one team or for another like they did last night. Thanks Dave...I am not a fan of any NFC North team but I do make your column weekly reading to get an opinion from a fan that does see both sides.

on October 15th, 2019 at 11:14am

Calm down....If the call was not made on Flowers Crosby would have made the FG anyway. Detroit would have got the ball back with about 1:20 behind by one.... So talk about that and not that GB stole the game. GO PACK GO !!

on October 15th, 2019 at 12:12pm

angry guy77 packers won a super bowl in the last decade, what have we won, zilch, how many times have we choked in that same decade!!!Boo who who everybody is against us!!

on October 15th, 2019 at 12:26pm

Someone compiled it. I never realized the left tackle actually did do hands to the face. You can't make it up.

on October 16th, 2019 at 05:50am

They won Greg,it’s over, boo who who, have your mom put your nuk in when you start whining 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😢😭😭🤯😭😭😭!!!!!

on October 16th, 2019 at 07:13am

lol elroy, another triggered cheesehead who probably likes to whine about the fail mary but then say GB deserved the win here. This is why the GB fanbase is a joke and always will be. Glade I left it. I can tell you there is a big difference in intelligence between the packer fans and viking fans.

on October 16th, 2019 at 09:13am

You are right angryguy77 there is a big difference in intelligence, you have to be stupid to cheer for that jinxed losing vikings franchise, packers would never give that unproven loser cousins that money, real intelligent morons!!!

on October 16th, 2019 at 10:07am

Don't worry Dave, those calls will all even out in Lambeau this year.........LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

on October 16th, 2019 at 10:42pm

Would you shut up and stop whining you immature cry baby Greg, you are embarrassing Minnesota people,I apologize Wisconsin,we are not all like Greg,we’ll see what he says when the Vikings get some calls,in today’s officiating you know it’s coming!!!

on October 17th, 2019 at 04:20pm

3 offensive pass interference calls against Minnesota in Lambeau. All of them brutal, drive killing and also called out by the announcers. This stuff all evens out, don't worry. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

on October 17th, 2019 at 04:54pm

What killed are drives in the Bears game Greg, are you bipolar,Stop whining!!!

on October 17th, 2019 at 05:24pm

What killed the drives in the Bear game........ah, legit defense maybe? Although, we could have used some hands to the jersey by their defensive ends. LOLOLOLOL

on October 17th, 2019 at 08:39pm

Ha Greg, I like how you never blame our shit quarterback and shit offensive line, they held the Bears all game!! Wake up moron

on October 17th, 2019 at 08:47pm

Mack was grabbing our lineman's jersey's all game long and never got called once! LOLOLOLOLOLOL

on October 17th, 2019 at 08:50pm

The last time the vikings won a game with calls like that? Someone refresh my memory, since you know everything about them. Give the game, thanks!

on October 18th, 2019 at 01:14pm

A couple of old sayings about the game come to mind about all this. 1] If the officiating can beat you you didn't do enough to win the game. 2} You are what your record says you are. In its 100th year, though, the NFL does seem to be complicating and confusing its game beyond what we've known from earlier times. In its attempts to make the game more "interesting" by injecting more offense - and specifically more passing offense - and protecting player safety we're seeing questions that before weren't so difficult: What's a catch? What's PI? What can you do or not do in pass blocking or rushing? It seems the rules need clarification and specification. The players, coaches and officials more training. We don't need more replay. The game, though, will always be played by human beings so that element will always be a factor. A player mistake. A coaching decision. An officiating call or non-call. They will always be the stuff for the water cooler the day after.

on October 18th, 2019 at 05:47am

Packers troll list all these games the packers got the benefit, the only reason we’re talking about this is because of the NFC championship game last year where New Orleans got robbed, well you got what you wanted and it’s because of whiners!!!Boo who who everyone is always picking on us that’s why we have no championships!!! You wanted more officiating and you got it!!

on October 18th, 2019 at 06:31pm

What does it matter, lady queens always get blown out or throw an interception or Peterson the child beater fumbles twice or missed field goals or 12 men in the huddle or Cunningham fumbling or Gary ,Andersen choking or wide right at the bank or the love boat scandal, they choke in the big games and never blame their own slugs, and now they whine about a few calls,Good grief!!!

on October 18th, 2019 at 07:40pm

You clowns keep talking about A CALL. It's CALLS! It's plural everyone. It's like getting 4 calls in a 7 minute span of football. It's getting 3 OFFENSIVE PASS interference calls and all are bogus. Dave will site a game from 5 years ago where A CALL went against the pack. Yes, the pack gets a brutal call once in a game every 3 or 4 years. Viking, Bear, and Lion fans are talking multiple crap calls in the same quarter, or in the same game. This is over the heads of packer fans. I can dumb it down more if someone can't connect the dots!

on October 18th, 2019 at 07:50am

great writing and commentary Dave.. i have always been a fan. even though i identify as a stalwart Packer fan, i do agree with commentary that the Packers have often gotten favorable calls at crucial times in some games, especially within the division v. the Lions and Vikings. i also feel that the Packers have been the best thing going for the NFC North, at least in the Aaron Rodgers era. the illegal hands to the face calls v. Detroit likely altered the game's outcome.. but, then again, no way do i think that the Lions should represent the North in January as long as the Packers are basically as they are now (mostly healthy, playing v. good D and with AR12 on fire). kudos to the Lions for playing very well thus far this year, kudos for the Vikings for their recent upswing; but in December, i certainly will be looking for a relatively healthy Packers team to be the team that the top NFC contenders will be worrying about facing.

on October 18th, 2019 at 08:50pm

It’s unbelievable you’re still whining about these calls, I can’t dumb it down low enough for you to get it,good teams overcome calls and win Super Bowls,no wonder you don’t understand, what are we 0 for 58!!!

on October 18th, 2019 at 11:17am

Nobody cares when a call or several calls go their way and they win. One thing is clear though, when is the last time Chicago, MN, or Det won a game based on bad officiating? How many times can we remember bad officiating helping GB win a football game? That is why people get overly frustrated when this happens again to the same team.

on October 18th, 2019 at 11:52am

Me and my Boy Elroy were SO relieved and happy when the refs gave the game to the packers ! ..... If the packers had lost .... well, we were seriously considering checking into euthanasia .... "Sigh of relief. "

on October 19th, 2019 at 01:20am

Vikings have had a lot of chances, had nothing to do with officiating,we choked when I was there and have been doing it ever since!!!

on October 19th, 2019 at 08:24pm

Dave's cover this morning on KFAN was the Detroit running back didn't score on the goal line. Seriously Davey! I was laughing on that one. Well there you have it. Green Bay did get screwed too. LOLOLOL
