Packers XLV

Niners Flex, Packers Flop.

Posted November 25th, 2019 @ 02:11pm

This was the Packers' chance, coming off their bye week, as healthy as anyone could hope for, this was their chance to establish themselves as legitimate NFC contenders. Yeah, so much for that.

The Pack had surprised us by winning eight of their first ten games, including a 4-1 record against teams that currently have winning records--that's tops in the NFL. Their return to contender status appeared a year ahead of schedule. But here's the reality, following the debacle by the Bay.

Their rookie head coach suddenly looks like a rookie head coach. With two weeks to prepare for the 49ers, a team with a gaudy record, but one that was coming off a couple of shaky performances, the Pack looked lost from the moment they took the field. Despite a healthy roster and just a few weeks removed from a shockingly plat performance in LA, the  team was awful in all three phases.

Let's start with the offense: a unit that for some reason seems much more fluid and productive when their best wide receiver is sidelined. Since Adams' return, the passing game has stalled, the running game has been up and down and third down production has been abysmal. Sunday night, with Rodgers under center, the Packers were 0-13 on third down. Yes, you read that right. Heck, you see it for yourself.

Losing Bryan Bulaga early in the night to a knee injury didn't help matters, but the Pack did little to help Alex Light deal with the NFL's best front four, rarely providing help, which had Rodgers running for his life. The good news is it appears Bulaga dodged a serious injury and should be back for the Vikings game, at the latest.

Defensively, the team held their own through most of the first half, bending but not breaking and holding the Niners to mostly field goals. But then their Achilles heel reared its ugly head: their inability to cover the middle of the field, where productive tight ends roam, where guys like Kelce, Henry and Olsen have torched them in recent weeks. Not surprisingly, they had no answer for the best in the game, George Kittle, who torched the Pack despite playing on a bum ankle.

And then there's special teams, and the punt units. Both sides were horrific on Sunday night. After a great start to the year, JK Scott suddenly looks like BJ Sander (look him up), doing nothing to help the Pack's beleaguered defense. And don't get me started on punt returns. They're on a historically inept pace when it comes to punt returns, with negative yards for the season. A legit punt returner and a legit special teams coordinator need to be high on the organization's to do list in the offseason.

It will be easy to overreact to this butt-kicking and the reality is that this team will likely win its next three games (at the Giants and home against the 'Skins and Bears), but we won't learn much about this team's resolve until the Monday night week 16 matchup against the Vikings, potentially with the division on the line.

Yes, barring a complete meltdown, the Pack will return to the playoffs this season. But there's a lot to fix and for really the first time all season, their rookie head coach needs to prove he's up to the challenge.

Like I said. The game will be decided by O line, you saw the game. I was the other guy OSSG that said Gary was a bust. Both the white lb's are great, and of course we missed them, should have taken the o lineman I said. I cant even remember his name , but he is starting I know that. Think about it. Niners have 4 -1st round picks on d line, we have 3 first round picks on 22 starters. 12, 23 and 20. I guess 26 was 1st round too. that is it. what a joke. everyone is mad at 12 for holding the ball, there not open, watch the game. NOW, everyone just thinks were going to beat the giants, bears, and redskins. WHY? They could lose 2 of those easy. If they cannot scheme some of these wr's open, 12 has no place to throw it. Even Adams looks a step slow since turf toe. As I said 3 weeks ago. I don't know how we got to 6 and 2, just not a good team, probably make playoffs , but 1 and done. Parker from Miami or Reynolds from Rams sure would look nice on this team wouldn't it?

Typical overreaction after a bad loss. I’ll stop back after the whiners settle down. Sheesh...

on November 25th, 2019 at 01:18pm

You are still in first packers fans and Seattle will give my ol purple pussies a beating and ugly Kirk will be back and you’ll still have a game lead plus tiebreaker,San Francisco would have given us a worse beating so don’t get to pumped up Cane and the rest of you idiots, like I’ve always said we have a really stupid fan base!!

on November 25th, 2019 at 01:26pm

Relax Vikings fans,we’ve only beaten the cupcakes also,we all know the big choke is coming and you’ll all disappear from this site like you cowards always do,we are still trailing Green Bay 13 to nothing idiots!!!

Rodgers gives me a boner, and I'm a chick.

on November 25th, 2019 at 03:19pm

Its not an overreaction Voice , when I have been worried about them for 3 weeks. Do You think there playing good football? not last game , last 3. if they didn't get turnovers, they lose. pretty simple. now special teams don't look good. write it as I see it. Go Packers

on November 25th, 2019 at 03:49pm

VOICE....Where the "H" have you been. I missed your commentary. I hope your OK. There are not many of us true Packer backers left on this site. After every Packer loss or controversial play we have to put up with the clowns and SNF wanna-be's. You and I have had some good discusions over the years...not always agreeing but discussing with logic. Hope your back for good. GO PACK GO !!

And that sound you hear is Dave from Maple Grove jumping off his roof.

on November 25th, 2019 at 08:34am

Wow!! I need to get a lot of negatives off my chest and head so here we go: 1- I've said it all number 2 or #3 wide receiver to compliment Adams. Gutey went the old TT way(remember all his undrafted free agent db's and LB's) with his wideouts. Not signing Randall Cobb was a mistake.(He is having a solid year with Dallas. Our UFA cant run patterns or get open for a precision passer like Rodgers. Round 1 2020 draft...Class is deep in wide receivers...dont overthink this...take the best one available and start him from day 1. 2- We havent had a cover linebacker who can run side line to sideline since Dave Robinson and thats a long time. We have been killed by tight ends and crossing patterns for a long time. Round 2 2020 draft....Find a LB who can run and cover. Also a deep draft position. 3- We all know that part time Buluga was going to get hurt. Not how...but when. He is good when healthy....but you can only count on him for 8-10 games a year. Round 3...2020 draft...Draft a capable tackle as Buluga's heir apparent. 4- What happened to our no huddle hurry up offense. It has been succesfull when used this year. We were 20 pts. down and taking all but 1-2 seconds to get a play off. You can see it on Rodgers face and body language the tempo was lazy. Thats coaching. 5- Lets face it...Rashon Gary looks like a bust. Davy and I both did not like the pick. Picking 12th you have to get a player who contributes immediately. Look at the 18 players drafted after Gary in the first round. All but about 2 are not starting. The braintrust in the draft war room missed. 6-This is the most unbelievable stat of the NFL season. After 11 games Packer punt returners are at a total of minus 11 yards FOR THE SEASON. Davy's son Jackson could field a punt and fall flat on his face forward and gain a yard and be positive for the season. Round 4 2020...Take a receiver who can run a dependable route and also use him to return punts. 8-Time zone West was not good to Packer body clocks this year. Lets hope time zone East is handled much better by players and coaches alike. Enough Negatives...I feel much better. We still determine our destiny for this season and I am optomistic. GO PACK GO !!

This team is so garbage. If they weren't gifted the game against the Lions and had the first ever OPI called on replay against the Vikings, this team would be outside of the playoffs. Got a gift against the Chiefs too. Rogers is done and this defense was always a paper tiger.

on November 25th, 2019 at 09:27am

Not sure who's neck was craned further last night, Kevin King looking for George Kittle or Rodgers looking for flags on the defense. Both of them probably want to get checked out for whiplash after that game, though. Seems like this team has a tough time playing 11-on-11 football.

on November 25th, 2019 at 09:31am

The most surprising thing about last nights game was finding out that the Packers traded for Mitch Trubisky.

on November 25th, 2019 at 09:46am

"We got a defense", lol that was such a funny joke. This team is falling apart. The shit tectonics are moving and two shit plates just collided producing a Shitquake that engulfed any realistic SB dreams GB had. The smell of shit is in the air and it ain't just the odor from everyone's breath in GB.

on November 25th, 2019 at 09:48am

When the pressure from the defense is heavy like it was last night, Rodgers starts to remind me of late Favre GB years. He is looking old. He was never this shaky with the football. Now every time he gets hit the ball comes loose. Father Time is undefeated.

on November 25th, 2019 at 09:49am

LaFleur was completely outreached by his former College Room Mate and his former boss. Coaching staff should be embrassed by this one. Only GB game I can remember that I shut off at half time. Really disappointing.

on November 25th, 2019 at 10:00am

Can we finally close the book on the "Kevin King is not a bust" narrative? Good God. He's approaching a Rashan Gary-level of bust.

on November 25th, 2019 at 10:07am

Hey Zim can we play with the Seahawks,ravens,49ers,saints,patriots,wetting my pants thinking about it but after all you’ve never won a thing and probably won’t be back next year and it will be another rebuild, anyway touching myself wishing about it?

on November 25th, 2019 at 10:09pm

And here I thought Rodgers was the second coming? How many overthrows did he have? And how many times did he throw it short? Packers have a patsy schedule the rest of the way, but after what I witnessed last night, no game is a gimme for that band of merry misfits.

on November 25th, 2019 at 10:21am

Hey Synny, Southside and anyone else who has their head buried in Rodger's jock. What you witnessed last night was what your team is when you are not being coddled by the reffs and having them help you move your anemic offense down the field. You are a .500 at best team sitting on top a mountain of yellow flags holding you at 8-3. When all the cards are down, you are exposed as phony. The sad part is you are too naive, ignorant or lord knows what other word to admit to this fact. Your fans were actually complaining how calls never go their way last night! AFTER WATCHING THE VIKES, LIONS, and PANTHERS GAMES YOU HAD PEOPLE FEELING LIKE THEY NEVER GET CALLS! HOW DUMB ARE YOU MAKING A MURDER CO STARS?!

on November 25th, 2019 at 10:21am

Roscoe Lombardi here, it's like my old daddy, HOF head coach of the Washington Redskins, used to say, "son, I'm more confused than a blind lesbian at the fish market." I have no idea why Rodgers is playing with obvious career threatening injuries. There is no other explanation, he must have a shattered clavicle and dislocated elbow. But being the WARRIOR, he was out there fighting, God bless him. Of course it doesn't help when the other team has the ref's on the payroll. Can you believe we only got 6 first downs through penalties last night? How is a team expected to compete, let alone win, with that kind of biased officiating. Only the refs can beat this team, we're hotter than a goat's butt in a pepper field. It's like my daddy used to tell me, "son, that just dills my pickle."

on November 25th, 2019 at 10:22am

I don't get the hype for the pack. We won a game strictly because of the refs when we beat the Lions. We got away with a few game crucial ones at Chiefs. This offense has done NOTHING other than hand it to the Raiders. Guess who else just did. The Jets. The defense can't stop anything. It's like they forgot about a WR half way through their route. Also, It was about time Bhatiari got called on a holding. We ALL knew that was coming. He holds EVERY play. This was just our time for it to pile on. Also, A-rod needs to stop bitching to the refs after every incomplete. He must have never read the book Ol' Yeller. So done with the fake team.

on November 25th, 2019 at 10:33am

Man, another screw job by the refs. NVM that Kittle pushed off on that td catch, or the constant no calls for hands to the face on the 9ers rush. Matt LeFail needs to step up his playcalling. completely out coached. this team stinks like Limburger.

on November 25th, 2019 at 10:54am

Oh, I find it funny you are complaining about calls we AREN'T getting. Dude, the packers get away with holding by Bhaktiari literally EVERY play. Not to mention A-rod doesn't know how to throw a deep ball without assuming he's gonna get a PI call every time. I can't remember the time I saw Rodgers throw a ball (not in desperation) to a receiver that was in stride. He purposely throws them short or long to draw PI's. Refs are finally catching up to it. Don't get me wrong, a win is a win, but I feel our days of being in the refs back pocket is over. Ever since the Fail Mary where we were screwed by the rent-a-refs...I feel the NFL gave refs order to be easy on us forever. And this game last night, felt like our contract ran out last week.

Perception changes quickly in the NFL and it's certainly changed now about the Packers. That may not be a bad thing for the season, however. Maybe this team needs to fly a little under the radar for awhile given the increasingly heady expectations that were attaching to it. An embarrassment like Sunday night can snap people back to reality and make them better going forward. This game could've been settled in the first 5 minutes. On their opening possession the Packers were making positive yards and picked up a first down by Davante Adams. But Adams committed a cardinal mental sin: After getting the first down he negated it by retaliating for the Niners getting chippy with him on the tackle out of bounds. Fifteen yard penalty later Rodgers gets sacked, fumbles, 9'ers have the ball on the Packer 2. The Pack has had blow-out losses in playoff seasons before. In 2015 they had a 38-8 loss to an Arizona team very much like this year's 49ers. Green Bay had 178 total yds., 77 passing yards, 4 turnovers in that game. Three weeks later they met in the playoffs again. Pack rolled up 386 yds., 251 passing on the same defense, led most of the way and forced the issue into overtime before losing. This team has shown resiliency after every loss this year and I expect they will again. There are 27 clubs in the league who would gladly trade their place for the Packers' right now. Sunday night's result should make it less likely they will get trapped in any of their upcoming games they should win handily. They can see now what they still need to do this year and the following to get through that remaining 3 year Aaron Rodgers' Super Bowl window. There's really nothing to give up on this season because of what went down Sunday night.

The Voice is still counting the viking and lion ref jobs in Green Bay as wins. The fact he can literally call them 8-3 is the LULZ of the century.

on November 27th, 2019 at 02:37pm

To Greg - if you wanna call those “dominating” performances against Washington and Denver “wins”, fine. You hold onto those.

on November 27th, 2019 at 05:35am

Isn’t Greg something Voice, glad to see you called him out,the packers really irritate him and he’s full of envy, that’s his whole season not the fact that the Vikings have never won a thing, clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed, the whole state of Minnesota is embarrassed by him !!!

on November 27th, 2019 at 06:17pm

Hey Dave, we don't write articles in Minnesota titled, "I've always liked zebras". I'm still laughing at that blog. It should be pinned at the top.

on November 27th, 2019 at 06:58pm

No we always blame zebras for losing in the big games Greg!!! Stupid Idiot!!!

on November 27th, 2019 at 09:25pm

Thanks, OSSG, my schedule has been insane the last few months; hopefully I’ll be around a little more often going forward. You and Larry are like brothers from different mothers to me, and I appreciate you both. Larry, I’m going to stand by my original point. There’s a lot of whining and crying here after a bad loss, but keep in mind this is a week to week league. Things can change on a dime. Last time I checked, the other team gets paid, too - and SF is a good one. But the Packers are still 8-3, with everything right in front of them, which is a hell of a lot better than they were a year ago. I’m still bullish on this squad. That’s not going to change.

on November 27th, 2019 at 12:03pm

No Problem Voice, good to have you back. As you can see, this is a place to vent your opinion. Some make it a joke, but only after we lose of course. I just don't like the way they are playing in all 3 phases right now for 3 weeks. Hopefully gets better, Enjoy the season as a wise man once said. Happy Thanks giving Packer Fans and even the viking fans too. It's time to think how lucky we are to be here and write our opinions, when some people are to sick to.

on November 28th, 2019 at 10:25am

I bet a lot more fits in your mouth than your foot Greg, man you just don’t get it,what a idiot!!!
