Watt's Happening?

Posted February 17th, 2021 @ 10:02pm

OK, we're more than a week removed from the end of the NFL season, and over three weeks removed from the end of the Packers season and there's much to catch up on.

Let's start with the biggest story of the week, the sudden free agency of JJ Watt, who was mercifully cut loose from the most dysfunctional franchise in the league and given a chance to ride into the sunset with a Super Bowl contender.

I know most of you are dying for this to happen, for Watt to return home and join Kenny, Za'Darius and Rashan in what would be an explosive pass rush.  I'd like to see it happen, if the money isn't exorbitant. But as I said on "In the Zone" Saturday, I think he ends up in Cleveland. That steam has picked up this week. That's a team on the cusp, with oodles of cap room and a transformational player in Myles Garrett looking for a partner. It just seems like a perfect fit. For that matter, I think the Pack should see what the Kawann Short market looks like. The recently released Panther would look awfully good next to Clark.

For the Pack, Watt is the outlier. This is a season where they will not be shopping for free agents, at least not in the first three weeks of free agency. If the salary cap drops to the neighborhood most are projecting, the Packers will look to add to the roster later, with bargain veterans, cast aside by a lower than expected cap.

I expect them to lose Aaron Jones, Corey Linsley and Kevin King. I think they'll cut loose Preston Smith, Christian Kirksey and Dean Lowry. That will get them under the cap and in a position to do some bargain shopping.

I hope they hang on to Jamaal Williams and Ricky Wagner. Williams would provide a solid complement to AJ Dillon and his popularity and work ethic, not to mention his performance, have earned him a second deal, as long as no one else is willing to throw big money his way. With Bakhtiari's recovery time unclear, Wagner seems like a security blanket for one more year--unless the team plans to move Elgton Jenkins over to right tackle.

Now, about the new defensive coordinator. Not excited. Disappointed. I understand wanting to introduce Brandon Staley's Rams concepts to this defense, but Barry is a two time washout at coordinator and I would have rather seen a young coach on the rise, perhaps a man of color, to get the opportunity to take this defense to the next level. Then again, I was underwhelmed by the Matt LaFleur hire too, so we'll see how things shake out.

Finally, back to Watt. If he ultimately decides he wants to finish his career with his hometown team to try to help them get over the top, and the two sides can find a way to make Watt happy and Russ Ball happy, the Packers win the offseason before free agency and the draft even begins.

I see Wagner got cut. I was thinking the Vikings should pick him up. Wagner played 608 snaps last year and didn't have one penalty. How the hell does an offensive tackle that plays most of the time not have a penalty? If the Vikings pick him up, he'll have a holding call on the third play of the opening game next year. BWAHBWAHBWAHBWAH According to Pro Football Focus, Wagner allowed only 16 total pressures, including just one sack, and didn’t commit a penalty while playing 608 total snaps during the regular season. He finished the season ranked among the top 25 offensive tackles in the NFL by overall grade and pass-blocking grade. I mean what the hell, not one penalty? I just laugh. I'm sure Bahktari made up for that and got penalties. BWAHBWAHBWAHBWAHBWAH

JJ Watt? So you want a 32 year old DT who has missed at least half the games in 3 of the last 5 seasons and was completely ineffective in one of the seasons he stayed healthy? LMAO. History repeating itself with THC here. Remember how game-changing of a signing he said making Jimmy Graham the highest paid TE in football was? THC was giddy as a school girl. How did that workout? Watt would be the Graham signing 2.0. I also love how THC now doesn't expect Aaron Jones back. You actually had the gall to put him at Cook's level at times in his career! Now he isn't even a must-sign. Hilarious. Finally, how does THC gloss over the fact it is 50/50 whether Rodgers even comes back to the Packers next year????

The only difference between a bag of trash and a girl from Wisconsin is the bag of trash gets taken out once a week! Barooooooooooo!

The DC hire is underwhelming, to say the least. But it's disappointing because it indicates LaFleur is going to continue with Mike McCarthy's folly of sticking with a 3-4 defense scheme long after it's apparent the Packers can't get the players to make it work. They'd be far better off going to a good 4 man front, especially after the demonstration Tampa Bay gave to them with one. And the Giants and the Seahawks and the 49ers in other postseasons losses. The way Shaq Barrett and Pierre-Paul abused the GB and KC tackles should have taught LaFleur something. The year ahead is going to be the true test of how good really Gutey and LaFleur are going to be. They've done well the last two seasons but they did have some considerable hold-over from Ted Thompson & McCarthy. Now they're going to be liable for more player and coaching decisions themselves. Time is short now for that second Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers. LaFleur and Gutekunst can make it happen or screw it up. Time will tell.

I always love when Viking Rubes like Cane criticize GB. Sixty years and counting buddy. I still think GB is going to find a way to sign Jones.

Hey Larry, the browns were 11-5 this year. Please explain how the packers are closer than the browns. The browns are young and up and coming. Please share the secret.

Hey Rick, Think of it like Badger fans criticizing Gopher fans. Over 0ne hundred years and counting for the badgers, yet their fans run their mouths. That's probably right over your head, but I gave an effort.

I believe Greg actually had a decent take regarding Wagner buried within his comment. We realize the need to slice and dice the roster to gain some cap space, but does the $4.25 million gained by cutting him leave us too vulnerable on the OL given Bakhtiari's uncertainty along with other potential losses? I have read elsewhere that adding Watt would be along the same lines as us previously adding Julius Peppers. All things being equal, I’d like to see that happen. But I think another team will be more able and/or willing to snap him up, which might ultimately work out for us since players with significant injury histories don’t always age well. However, that would be the ultimate “all-in” move. Drafting “The Sauce” in the 2nd round last year now looks solid since we are likely to lose Jones and/or Williams. The new DC neither excites nor disappoints me, which is how I felt about LaFleur upon his hire. Hopefully that too will exceed expectations. However things may shake out with the roster, I’m mainly hoping we’ll be able to move on from the “Invisible Enemy” enough to actually put some fannies on the seats next season. Stay warm and safe!

Cane, I love your banter with THC, we all know he is a homer, we love that. he does know a lot on packers you have to admit. I said in last post that Watt will come here only if he wants to play for Packers and 12, and get try and get a ring. If it's money we wont get him, Probably the browns then. But, I try and back my statements up with facts. Did you know. Watt was rated 7th in qb pressures last year? and was double teamed 3rd most in the league.. I will take my chances with Clark and 55 and Gary helping him.. On the RB's. look up the stats. the last 2 years, cook has played 28 games, 2692 yds rushing. 30 total tds. 878 receiving. and 4.7 per rush att. Jones. 30 games, 30 tds total, 2188 yds rushing, (remember he doesn't get as many attempts as cook does) 809 yds. receiving. and 5.00 yds per att. pretty damn close right?? I think he had the right to say that. My opinion. On picking up Graham and he was a bust. BUT, do you want me to start on Spielman the bad ones he has. Hell he has 3 just on kickers that cost him picks, Let alone 4 picks for 1 in Patterson that was a bust. all said and done. we are all having fun here in this virus crap were in. But if you want to bet 12 will be here next year. I will. after that who knows. but your guy maybe gone before 12 is. Keep that in mind. But maybe you would LIKE THAT. lol.

greg, If you read what I wrote I said if he wants more money he will go with t browns. Watt grew up in sconny and would be something he may think about. Are you trying to tell me the Browns have better chance to get a ring then the Packers? Did u forget about the bills and chiefs in that conference? Not sure if you can add. Packers were 13-3 the last 2 years. Is that better then 11-5????. hope this helps you out now. case closed.

very disappointed in Watt, they always say they want a ring, BUT it always comes down to money. they will make playoffs , but will not win a ring with bills and k.c there. his choice. 31 ml. 2 years. 23 guaranteed.

Larry, if he gets the Bills or Chiefs, you do realize he's in the Super Bowl, right?

on March 1st, 2021 at 07:02pm

Larry, I thought the cardinals were in the NFC. I thought the Chiefs and Bills were in AFC. I will have to pay more attention.

on March 2nd, 2021 at 05:25pm

Greg, keep to complaining about the refs, I said they wont make it to the super bowl, cause of bills and chiefs. you really have a hard time understanding don't you? Do u even know what teams are in conferences.? go outside and get some fresh air today.

on March 2nd, 2021 at 11:07am

YOU are an idiot greg, if you read back, we were talking about watt going to the browns. AND I said, they wont get by the chiefs and bills to get to super bowl. You really have HARD TIME UNDERSTANDING THINGS.
