Expect Jones to Drop Balls for a Different Team in 2011

Posted March 8th, 2011 @ 04:03pm

When labor peace is finally reached, either in the next two weeks or the next six months, James Jones will undoubtedly be an unrestricted free agent. And a team out there will whisper into his ear that he will start for them and be a focal point of their offense. And he will jump at the offer.

After all, you've seen his quotes, right? "I want to be a starter...I don't know if that will happen here with Donald Driver playing until he's 40." Are you kidding me? Driver is slowing down and the end is near. Jones has a chance to play opposite Jennings for years with one of the game's top QBs throwing to him. The Pack plays in 3-4-5 WR sets more than anyone in the NFL.

The Packers' brass will lament the loss of Jones...for about a minute, and then they'll move forward and reload. Sure, they'd welcome him back with open arms--at the right price. We've seen moments of brilliance, only to be erased by inexplicable drops at the worst possible times.

Ultimately, this offense won't miss him. Provided Jermichael Finley returns at 100%, the team will once again feature him in the offense, along with Jennings and the other receivers. Look for the Packers to add a receiver in the draft--it could be in the first few rounds, if they find someone who can also handle returns.

The offense would enter 2011 with Jennings, Driver, Nelson and a rookie (plus Swain) at WR, and Finley, Quarless and Crabtree at tight end, with Grant, Starks, a third down back and the three fullbacks.

My guess is the offense won't lose a step and won't overpay a talented, but maddening WR. Rodgers can make mediocre WRs look good and good WRs look great. I say the Pack takes its chances that they'll find someone else and begin reloading that position.

I can't quite get flaccid over the thought of James Jones just yet. If he played anywhere else, he would me mentioned in the same breath as Andre Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald.

Davy....I find your poll question very interesting on Matt Flynn. With the state of QB's in the NFL a quality backup is important. In most cases I would say trade him for a #2 or #3 draft pick....but then who is your backup....TJack or some other retread. So ...I say he is more valuable to us than any #2 or # 3 draft choice. But....also I would not like to lose him as a free agent after next year and get nothing in return. may be interesting to see if we need to groom a 3 3 QB to replace Flynn in the future.

Jones had some clutch plays in the playoffs. Most notably in the Super Bowl, a big-time diving catch on 3rd down on the Packers' final TD drive. He also had a 21-yard reception on the final FG drive. Yeah, he had some frustrating drops that (if caught) might've put the WC and SB games away early. But he's definitely got some skills, and if he ever gets serious about solving his drop problem, he could be really really good. That said, I would tend to agree with your assessment: sign him at a reasonable price; cut him loose if someone else is willing to (over)pay more. D∈T

David, A team never has enough depth of vertern players. James Jones will benefit next year after being given an opportunity to play more of a role in a big time offense. Add back the Finley factor (assuming that he can play 12-14 games) and the routes that the wide receivers present to the opposing defense is on a significantly different plane than what we had this year with tight end by committee. Jones would potentially have a much less accomplished DB covering him with the likes of Jennings, Driver/Nelson, Grant (out of the backfield), Finley etc etc. Jones has too much talent to let go. Matt Flynn...TT took a major risk three years ago backing up AROD with two unproven rookie QBs.....that said, Harrell needs to be developed for another year, but he has a huge huge upside under the MM qb school. Flynn is the Zeke Bratkowski of the modern era, as an above average safety net in case AROD gets dinged. I say keep Flynn as insurance to next year's SB. a far different

HeadCheese, you hit the nail on the head. Only thing I would add is that they'll also tell him he'll get "starter money" which he simply won't get from the Packers. I am fine with it. As stated, with Finley back, I expect offense to be more explosive with or without JJ. Addition of Starks/Grant makes defending Packers even more daunting. GoPack!
